Best "neighbourhood" steakhouse in your town? - Thu, 01/24/13 3:49 PM

What's the best neighbourhood steakhouse in your town? By "neighbourhood", I also mean comparatively family friendly prices as opposed to "downtown" prices. So a Morton's or a Ruth Chris' Steakhouse in a suburban mall would not fit my definition of "neighbourhood". And of course I don't want any national chains anyway.

Out here in Suffolk county on Long Island, I'm partial to PG's Steakhouse on Jericho in Huntington.  Modeled after Peter Luger's menu and not overly attentive service but not a bargain either. I guess you get what you pay for.  It is a lot closer than driving to Brooklyn.

When I worked in Hoboken NJ 15+ years ago, I used to really enjoy Arthur's. Something about a steakhouse that put a bowl of pickles on the table and served liter mugs of beer.  Ruined my work ethic in the afternoon though. I see they are no longer in Hoboken (now Morris Plains) and have no idea if they serve the same good fare.

Amen to Arthur's as a neighborhood steak joint!

How would you like your potatoes?

...because we only serve them one way! That's how you'll have them!

Arthur's is still there.

My mistake, I thought you couldn't put it on the internet if it wasn't true! Anyone else hate that State Farm commercial?

Seems there are now a couple of Arthur's in NJ (N Brunswick, Morris Plains, Hoboken); how do they compare?  They don't 'share a common web site so I wonder. North Brunswick seems to have 2 different web addresses for the same place, really odd. And the potatoes are the 'Arthur's Famous' type.

All of the Arthur's are like Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton. They're together. They're not. Everyone just stops paying attention to the break-up and make-up.

I love Arthur's of <<<Hoboken>>>

It's a good fun casual local Roadfood steakhouse. It's certainly fun!

The biggest factor to Arthur's is location. Where it is may lead some to think it's Peter Luger of <<<Hoboken>> and they cry about it and go on and on (using NYC prime as a measure) when it's a red & white tablecloth pickles on the table one kind of potato local place....serving good food. Roadfood!

I haven't been there in about a year. I'm due!

I Knoxville, TN it is Ye Olde Steak House on Chapman Hwy.  It has been there for better than 44 years and you can get any size steak you wish.  I have been there many times and it is consistently very good.

We have a lot of family-owned supper clubs in the Twin Cities, as well as the iconic Murray's and Manny's which are high-ticket locations.  I love Murray's, but it is definitely a splurge.

My favorite steak place went out of business a few years ago.  It was in "Nordeast" Minneapolis and was called Little Jack's, and my husband and I just loved it.  It was wonderful for steaks, broiled chicken livers, and a lot of other supper club favorites, but also did an exceptional Thanksgiving lunch/dinner.  You had a choice of a buffet or ordering from the menu, and we always chose the (limited) menu. They served first-rate roast duck as well as turkey with all the trimmings.  Unfortunately,  the place changed hands in 2004 and was not as good after that.  In any event, it is, as I said, now gone.  http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/news/2006/05/24/end-era-little-jacks-closes-its-doors

Little Jack's is not to be confused with Jax, which is in roughly the same neighborhood and still doing well.  Many people think it is terrific.  I've taken guest speakers there, and found the food, and especially the service, to be uneven.  http://www.jaxcafe.com/

Mancini's Char House in St. Paul is another fixture.  I wanted to love it, but I didn't.  The atmosphere is great, but the food . . . not so much.  http://www.mancinis.com/

When I go back "home" to Indianapolis, I always try to go to Murphy's.  It's both a bar and a steakhouse, very informal with a real neighborhood feel, not far from the Indiana State Fairgrounds.  I've enjoyed it for years.  I like their steak, but the "star" on the menu, for me, is the fried lobster.  http://indiana-steakhouse.com/

I've been to Mancini's a few years ago for a wedding rehearsal dinner. Place was interesting but can't say a lot about the food considering we were part of a large group. Are you familiar with a place in Roseville called Lindey's?  When I was working for Univac over 30 years ago it was the place to go when we had to visit 'the plant'.

My kids used to go to St Elmo's in Indianapolis for special occasions but I've never been.

I had also liked Bones in Atlanta but that was a lifetime ago as well.
I'd like to nominate a nice place in Emmitsburg MD but I don't recall steak on the menu.

Even though I grew up in Indianapolis, I've never been to St. Elmo's.  When I go back home to visit, I often see an old friend from Kokomo, who raves about St. Elmo's -- but we always end up at Hollyhock Hill, primarily because we usually meet for a late Sunday lunch.

Never been to, or, until now, heard of Lindey's.  I'll have to check it out.

Here in the Pa Suburbs....nearer to Wilmington than Philly, there is the Mile High in Glen Mills.  An Awesome presentation and good bar pours at a little less than the Ruth Chris/Morton's would be...but not by much!...and you get a potato and green beans with your entree.  You don't get to pick your steak and the variety is limited........but a Great Steak night

Here in McKinney, TX, USA Today's "Second Best Place to Live in America" - (and the best place that does not have any state or local income taxes!) we are blessed with Rick's Chophouse ( http://rickschophouse.com/ ).  It is truly a class joint and is Mrs. Metro's and my favorite local restaurant.

In fact, I look forward to seeing Phil & Amy Mickelson dining there one day soon!

This place: http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/4005-Quail-Ridge-Dr_Mc-Kinney_TX_75070_M70833-03908 is, I am sure, as nice as their present San Diego digs and is presently available at less than a third of it would cost in Cali.

And McKinney has its own Gulfstream-laden airport, Cooper Clinic, and TPC course.

I am not sure we have such a place here in Cincinnati

We have the chains, naturally, at most all steak price and quality points (Ponderosa through Ruth's Chris)

We have some local joints all run by a fellow named Jeff Ruby that are pure upscale steakhouse, prices starting in the upper 30's w/o sides

I dont think we really have anything inbetween, aside from a few places that are local that happen to have a steak on the menu, which is not the sort of place I think you are talking about

There is a joint on the west side named Maury's Tiny Cove that *might* be an exception, but I've never been there

You are welcome.

The East is still "my home".

The Steelers have more class in their little toe-nail than "the local team".

We still keep a place in McLean from which I appreciate as I had never before the height of the trees and the green of the grasses; the D.C. Metro, the true intent of the Mall, and the Acela-access to The City, which is truly the greatest on Earth.

I remember Little Jack's.  Good place. Sad to hear that it's gone.

My Twin Cities place where I liked the steak special was on Como Ave in Minneapolis:  Manning's Cafe.  I had a group of friends (Unix Users of Minnesota, talk about a nerdy group) that would meet once a month on Wednesdays and then go to Manning's afterward.  The Wednesday special was the steak dinner with a side of navy bean soup, and that and a big schooner of beer would be my dinner.   I have no idea if they still do that, I left the area in 2001, and that group of people mostly disbanded (a related group that goes out monthly for beer and pizza is still around, however)

Around here in NH?  We only really have one steakhouse, and it is semi-fancy (Jesse's in Hanover, NH).  However, they've got a killer happy hour with $2 pints, so I eat there more than I should...

I usually end up in Dayton once or twice every year for work.  When schedule allows, I love hitting up the Pine Club.

In Covington Ga. It's Jim Stalvey's which is featured here on Roadfood. The steaks and everything else are very good. They are also known for their lunch specials.

We have ONE locally owned steakhouse in our area that's not a chain and it's in Alachua, FL.  Conestoga's  www.conestogasrestaurant.com.  We are severely lacking in the beef serving industry.  We usually end up just grilling ourselves.

We have a local spot called Scotch N' Sirloin, open for 45 years. I've been going there for at least the past 10 on and off. Their steaks are very good, and I'm addicted to their french onion soup (made with Gruyere). I have a few coupons I need to use up, so I'll probably go next week and tear up a big sirloin.

This whole tread is a sad comment on the status of local owned steakhouses or even high end local owned. I can think of some in the 60's and early 70's but they are all long gone. We have some nice places but no standouts.

Excellent filet and prime rib.  70's supper club atmosphere, probably original.  Priced competitively.  and... valet parking.. in the country.

A lot of people in Kansas City have talked about various places such as Jess n Jim's or The Hereford House.  Frankly, neither one of those places has impressed me.  The best steak from a home-owned restaurant that I have had around here was probably from The Plaza III.

The BEST steak restaurant I have ever eaten at was definitely Brooks Steak House outside of Denver, CO.

We just had an article about that in the local news, as the original is here in Syracuse. They just weren't getting enough business apparently. The owner said it was "a dragging economy, nationally and especially in Rochester". They just closed this past Tuesday.

My first experience in the food service business was working for a local DC area chain, Sir Walter Raleigh Inn. It was a nice steakhouse with prime rib, lobster, steaks and a nicely done salad bar. Sadly, there's only one left now, (over in MD) but I'd be more than willing to give them a chance, if they're even half as good as they used to be.

IN Charlottesville it's the very old school Aberdeen Barn!

http://www.aberdeenbarn.com/

Wow!  It's still there?!  I remember it fondly from my grad school years (1969-72) at The University.  Fantastic!  My youngest is, in a few months, getting married in C'vle.  I'm adding the Barn to the C&O, and The Bavarian Chef on my eating list.

Do you remember That Steak Place?  They had the first salad bar I ever saw outside of a Smorgasbord.

I always enjoyed The Kissimmee Steak Company during our each and every visit to Orlando, 1982 - 06.  On my last visit my meal was just O.K.; sadly, it is now closed.

Never had a good "neighborhood" steakhouse anywhere I lived.

You never went to Troggio's in NeCa during your years at our "Mother Fair"?

From my "old 'hood", JR's Stockyeards Inn in McLean has merited my continuing patronage since their founding as a small place on Fairfax Circle in 1978.  We still visit several times a year during our "Summering" away from the non-relenting heat of Dallas.

Anyone visiting D.C. who craves a good steak absent the prices charged by The Prime Rib***, Morton's**, The Palm*, Smith & Wollensky's*, or the excreable Ruth's Chrisnegative***, should try JR's 1.5*.

(My goodness, how I miss the original Duke Zeibert's, "Blackie" Auger, and Mel Krupin (for his several successful years when he took over Paul Young's wonderful space).  Here's a nice site to "geeze" about the D.C. of the '70's+ http://thekojonnamdishow.org/off-mic/2010-07-27/restaurants-past-evolution-citys-food ).

When I lived in Old Town Alexandria (Virginia), one of my favorite places for steak was called the Charcoal House, on the north side of town.  The neighborhood-type restaurant had a neat mural that completely covered one wall in one of the dining rooms -- my recollection is that it was (inexplicably) of a mountain range (the Grand Tetons?).  I remember enjoying many steaks (and steak sandwiches, at lunchtime) there.  It was sold, I assume, and reconfigured into a completely different restaurant/lounge at some point before I left Alexandria in 1999, called the Stardust or something like that.

I remember it well.

Here in Dallas, we seem to have a "tony" steakhouse on every corner. But the "best in class" seem to be:
1-Pappas Bros. Steak House
2-Bob's Steak and Chop House (Omni Hotel location)
3-Al Biernat's

I dont think we really have anything inbetween, aside from a few places that are local that happen to have a steak on the menu, which is not the sort of place I think you are talking about

There is a joint on the west side named Maury's Tiny Cove that *might* be an exception, but I've never been there.

I'm actually wrestling with my own question. There are a couple of steak places outside the downtown area, Senior's uptown and Omega in Oakville, which I really like but the prices are too high to fit my definition of "neighbourhood". I have to hit six places over the next year or so, three of them in Scarborough - Black Forest, Blackthorn and Smith Brothers Steak Houses, plus the Steak Pit on Avenue Road,  Steve's Place on Merton Street and the Ambrosia Steak House in Mississauga.

Smith Brothers looks like a winner!

I'd have to be all over the mussels...since I am not very carnivorous.

Agreed.  Dallas is a tough town in which to purvey a tender steak.  Smith & Wollensky failed here as did the North Dallas location of Morton's (which I see recently re-located their surviving location from near the Sixth Floor Museum to your 'hood; try their bacon-wrapped scallop appetizer).

The Princess and I enjoy Dakota's for a late lunch/early dinner when we venture into the canyon; the small crowd ambience there is wonderful.  We are planning lunch there when we visit my fellow Presbyterian of French ethnicity's (the only things we have in common aside from a mortal fear of collective debt) latest nine-figure philanthropic endeavor; (even money he'll cut a check for the final Calatrava bridge and name it for Margot).

Haven't been to Bob's at our $400MM "public work";  Al Biernat's is my personal "fave".  On the "newsfront":  "our" Bailey's in Fairview closed.  That is sad, because their "Octogon Room" a) had NYC-style banquettes, b) served a decent steak, and c) prohibited children.  For that I had no problem dropping two bills with the only booze being my two single-batch Bourbons neat with separate ice and water sides.  God knows I appreciate the amazingly optimistic fecundity of Dallas' caucasians, but I am appalled at their incapacity to, as the Brits term it, "mind their young".

Jim, I totally agree about the kid thing. Having two (now adult) kids, I feel I've already served my time in hell.

Btw, lucky for you $wise, the Princess does't partake in alcohol.

In the small town of Avinger (approximately 10 miles from me) is the 5 D Cattle Company Steakhouse. They put out some of the best steaks ever and its really a roadfood restaurant. The owner is a great man. If I could post a link I would.
