Best sandwich in Des Moines, IA

This was actually an interesting poll from our local independent newspaper.

The winner was a hand cut, hand pounded pork tenderloin from non-corp farm raised meat served in a small Grocery store / Deli that was founded in the 20's and still owned by the same family.  Worth stopping by if you ever find yourself in Des Moines, IA looking for something to eat.

On my last trip through Des Moines this past summer, I stopped at B&B Grocery on the suggestion a friend who had spent some time in Iowa.  This place is an absolute home run.  In my very limited experience with pork tenderloins, this may well be the best I have ever had.

It is absolutely not a restaurant, but they do have a small seating area where customers can eat items purchased at the deli counter.  They have an array of cold sandwiches, as well as daily specials.  It seems that the meat that they use for burgers is freshly-ground on-site (it's a grocery store, remember?) and I saw someone eating one and it looked delicious.

In addition to their deli counter and grocery, they seem to sell an odd collection of sports memorabilia and other bric-a-brac, too.

From my recollection, I was the only person in there who didn't seem to know everyone else.  There were five or six local cops eating there when I arrived and I asked the check-out girl (who I think was the owner's daughter) if the cops would mind if I sat nearby.  She calls out "Hey, Tommy....you won't mind if he comes over there and sits near you boys, do ya?"  Fantastic.

Excellent, Travellin Man.  I love to hear that sort of stuff.

The Killer Sub is also very good.  It's a neighborhood place, and old, but super friendly and rediculously cheap prices for what you get.

Should really be on any RoadFooder's list of stops in the area.

Also of note, all of the places mentioned at the beginning of the article I linked have fantastic food that is definitely RoadFood worthy.

Also, the writer of that article, Jim Duncan, is a great guy and full of local / state restaurant knowledge.  If you have any questions about Iowa food, you can e-mail him and he will reply.

Jim wrote the article on the Farmer's Kitchen for the Iowan magazine. He is a great guy and really knows his food. Check out his food blog: http://www.xanga.com/FoodIowa

Inthewater, Thanks for your very informative post. I've always wanted to visit your state, and this post may make it happen for me. One thing's for sure - I'm bringing the big cooler to haul back products from the B&B Market!
    Thanks again,  Doug

    Right on, Doug.

If you stop by our town, swing into http://www.grazianobrothers.com/index.htm
for someof the best Italian Sausage around.  It's also been in business for about a century.  Great place to get a feel for "real Des Moines", and our heavy Italian heritage often goes un-noticed to new comers.  Most of the best places in town for food are on the South side, in my opinion.  :)

I have a feeling that they would have won the same online poll in the alternative weekly paper if Dad's Killer were nominated instead of the tenderloin.
