Best steaks in N.J.

I'd like to get some input from some other readers as to where the best steak in New Jersey can be found. I live in central Jersey
( Freehold area ) and there's not really much outside of the chain places which serve garbage cuts around here. One place is The Cabin
which is pretty good but not like a "N.Y." steakhouse.

    welcome to roadfood, RandellButts !
Your area is tough for good steaks..........I've been to the Cabin recently, right after they reopened after their fire..........love the rustic atmosphere, but I felt the food was just "okay"...........my sister lives in Manalapan, so I get up that way every few weeks or so! I'm still searching for good steaks, etc up that way!! They need more places that are'nt chains!!!
(enough with the Outback, Fridays (2 of them, Freehold and Manalapan), and Applebee's...)

Have you tried Arthurs Tavern in North Brunswick? (just a mini chain).......
I've been meaning to try them, cause I can't remember ever going to one...

I used to like Alexus Steak house on rt. 22 in Mountainside (by union, springfield area)
one could get a real well prepared 24 ounce steak for like, $12.95.......nice and charred..

but they went out of business...

I live by Atlantic City. The Palm steak house in the Tropicana Hotel casino has great steaks, as long as you don't mind paying a bit more...(steak a la carte is $37.00) but it's prime...

good luck in your search, and hope you keep posting!

It's not exactly in your neighborhood, but I think you might find it to be worth the drive.

My favorite is the River Palm Terrace in Mahwah. I think they have another location in Edgewater and perhaps another one in Paramus (?)

Steve's Sizzling Steak House on rt17S in Carlstadt,NJ serves a great steak,
you have your choice of Porter House,Filet Mignon,NY Strip,or T-Bone.
The Long Horn(not to be confused with the Lone Star)franchise in Howell, also
serves a very good steak, one of my favorites is the porter house with a side
    of their grilled shimp.

I've read about Steve's sizzling steaks in Carlstadt, (in NJ monthly mag) and it's definitely on my list to incorporate on a roadtrip....
sounds just like my kind of place, cause that's what I liked about that Alexus Steak House (RIP). It was "sizzling steaks"; they never claimed it was prime, but yet it tasted SO good! I like an exciting steak!

good thinking to mention that Longhorn steak house.......I forgot about that place. I had a good steak there about 3 months ago for lunch. It was seasoned real nice, and had so much flavor. It was some kind of reasonable price , too, like maybe $12.95 or 16.95 , whatever. Anyway, I did not feel taken. It was served on a stainless steel type of plate. I remember how excited I was when that place opened up...(as Longhorns were mostly down in Florida, Georgia, etc), and that was the first NJ location, I believe.

And after my steak, I killed about an hour looking around that Barnes and Noble in the same "big box" retailer shopping center.
There is a Johnny Carinos, and a Target, etc. there...

    this thread really took off!

Sorry positive posters, but Steve's Sizzlin' Steaks was one of the worst steakhouse experiences I've ever had. I went there with my family a few years ago. First off, there was a Exterminating company truck parked right by the entrance. Hmmm. But we went in anyway. The smoke factor was about as high as I can remember in a restaurant. It seemed everybody but us was lighting up. Service was slow to non-existant (I got the distinct impression they had no need for a semi-yuppie looking family in thier midst). The steaks were drenched in saltiest steak sauce I've ever encountered. And somewhere between the steak and the 2nd drink order, our waiter either quit, went off shift, or just disapeared. We had to flag down another harried waiter to get our checks, by that time we just wanted to get out of there. --Ken

I've been enjoying Steve's Sizzling Steak House for more than 23 years, seen a vast array of customers from professional athletes from the Giants,Jets,Nets,Devils and New York Mets,Yankees,Knicks and Rangers to business exec's,as well as meeting family and friends from all over Nj & Ny who appreciate a great steak.Once in a while the service can be slow, but,I take that into consideration when the restaurant is packed. The steaks are prepared in a soy and smoke flavoured sauce, which can be excluded if you prefer. I know taste is very subjective,in the 23 years eating at this steak house, out of the 100's of people I've dined with I can recall only 2 that were not
as enthusiastic as the rest of us were with the meal.

I'm from Freehold also--I had a nice steak last week at La Cippolina. My fave steaks in the area were at the Ivy League in Howell (Rt 9, by 195). I haven't been there in a while & knwo they just changed mgmt, so quality could have changed.

Another good bet is the Chapter House also on Rt 9.

Neither place is fancy, but I have had some great cuts there.

    Joisy,

The chapter house and the ivy league were owned by the same people. They have since split up the business. I live right around the block
from the ivy league and they do have a good steak, but its not a great steak. They do however make an awesome crab dip, as does the chapter house if you like it. What i was looking for was a restaraunt that has a more NY steakhouse quality steak. Where is that place La Cippolina you mentioned?

hey Neighbor! LOL! La Cippolina is right on Main st, across from CVS & you enter through a kind of alley way. Definitley a classy & slightly pricey place. The steak is a rib eye & it was left on the bone & cooked as I had asked.

    Hi Ellen -

Have you tried the Alexus in Montclair / Clifton area. It's off Rt. 3 right before it turns into Rt 46. Or maybe the name has changed. But that was also a good steak place. It's in the same vein as the Alexus you mentioned in your early post.

    To all -

Excuse me for the lack of memory, it's been 11 years since I had a steak at this place... but down in the Red Bank area, there was this Irish place that served a big steak for a cheap price... like Alexus.

Maybe somebody might know... But that was a decent place to go to down in that area.

    Thanks,

    Doug

    hi Doug,
thanks for caring; no I have'nt tried that Alexus in Clifton, NJ.
I'm pretty sure it is the same owners as the RIP location in Mountainside, as I remember that they had a few locations.
I'm glad to hear that they did not all go out of business...!

I've been on a NYC "steak rampage" the last few weeks..

I can only imagine how bad the OLD management was!! CauseI went to the Ivy League a few months or so back, and I was very disappointed!
It's funny, cause I did sum it up to "bad management"!
And that was the NEW management?!?!?

It was a Sunday afternoon, and they were very short of help.
The manager felt so bad for me , he ended up taking my order. (he was nice, at least)
My burger was just okay, nothing special. (and I waited so long for it) Plus the roll was much bigger than the burger. They just seemed to me like a place that definitely did NOT have their act together.
and it's a shame , cause it's so pretty and big on the outside.

I was actually going to try one of their steaks, but figured I better just stick to the burger. (perhaps like you said , the steaks ARE good). I was'nt in the mood to pay the $25 or so , and give the place that $$, cause the whole atmosphere (with the waiting for service ,etc) did'nt feel comfortable to me.
I felt even worst for the family next to me with young children, as they were there before I was , but my burger came out way before their meal. I told them I almost felt a little guilty.

yeah--I think it's a place going down the tubes--last year (& many times before that)I had the steak & shrimp--was fantastic. Last I went 6 months ago, they changes the steak cut & it had more fat--def was disappointed. if u have been there more recently & it stil wasn't as good as it had been, I may have to stay away. Hmm--Chapter house anyone? (They used to have the same owner)

Without a doubt I ie the steaks at Fernandez Steakhouse the best . They are located in Ironbound Newark, NJ just off of Raymond Blvd. about 4 traffic lights from the NJ Turnpike.

You can order several different cuts cooked then served to your table or......(what i like to order ) you can get what is called "Steak on a Tile" What you do is order the cut of steak of your choice....I usually get a boneless ribeye (great flavor). The steak is partially cooked and then placed upon terracotta roof tile with fire underneath it in which is brought to your table where you can cut and then place back over the center of the tile where the fire is to cook to your liking and then eat or put to one end of the tile as not to overcook it. on the side they serve a garlic compote made up of butter with garlic in it and tastes great over the steak. The steak is easily 24 oz. and always outragous!

For those of you who dont know what a terracotta roof tile looks like:

Arthurs in Morris Plains is my favorite out of the 3 or so restaurants they still have operating. The bucket of pickles is one of the best parts of going to Arthurs. My all-time best eating experience there was when I polished off the 24oz delmonico and then had a 1/2lb bacon cheeseburger.
