Between San Antonio and Houston I-10

About 10 years ago I was going towards Houston on I-10 and I think halfway in between San Antonio and Houston, the person that was with me had to get some homemade potato salad, hand-made sausage, cole slaw, etc. and of course a Big Red soda! This place was to the right (north) of I-10. Does anyone know of this place? Does it still exist? Please help I am going that way again in the next month and want to eat there.

Luling, the barbeque place is in the center of town, called the Grocery, maybe, but easy to find -- very good Q.

City Market in Luling would have been about 10 miles off I-10 and you wouldn't have gotten slaw and ps there. Check out the Stern's review on this site; if you'd been there, you'd probably remember the building and the pit room indoors. If you were headed from SA to Hou, north would have been to the left of I-10, not right, so which was it and how far off the highway? Places I can think of north of I-10 and close to the highway would have included Joel's in Flatonia -- much closer to SA than Hou -- and Mikeska's in Columbus, only about 60 miles from Hou. Both are right on the frontage road. Joel's is kind of a rambling wood frame structure; Mikeska's building is a round thing that looks to me like it was originally a savings and loan office or something. There would be others to consider if it was farther off the highway or to the left (i.e., south). PS and slaw are the usual suspects in Texas Q joints, as is Big Red. Home made sausage is also pretty common in the Texas BBQ belt but I don't know if either Joel's or Mikeska's makes their own.

If you were going towards Houston, from San Antonio, a place on the right would be south of I-10. Did you find the place you were looking for? Was it a restaurant or a take-out place? We've always liked Joel's. The big restaurant in Columbus, North of I-10, has a great Friday night buffet--lovely fresh vegetables.

A few years back, when we were doing our Czech Heritage roadtrip in that area of Texas, we came across a cafe/buffet with a German name just North Of Schulenburg. It was very close to the Interstate, but on the north side, away from the town. I think this may be the same place asked about in the above post. The food was pretty good, but the thing I remember is that they had the world's oldest Waitress scurrying around with heavy food trays and cleaning tables at age 87. She was a firecracker to listen to!

Schobel's--I remembered the name. It is family run, with lots of pictures of football star kids and their familys around the room. The menu is not that great, but the buffet is worth a drive.

Was it an enormous buffet on one side and a bakery with a really big selection of fruit kolaches on the other? (Decent kolaches, but not the best - our fave remains The Czech Stop in West.) If so, Lucky Bishop and I ate there on one of our road trips a few years back - the same gloriousspring trip that started out with Mardi Gras in Lafayette and Eunice, LA.

Following up on my own post - I just did a little googling and I believe that the place Al referred to (and DEFINITELY the place we ate at) is the Oakridge Smokehouse in Schulenburg.

Yes! Oakridge Smokehouse! That's been driving me crazy for YEARS, because it was one of those occasions where you just kind of fall upon a restaurant by accident because you're hungry and it's there, and I couldn't even remember what town we were passing by at the time. (This was Ash Wednesday, the day that we drove the four hundred miles from Lafayette to San Antonio in literally something like five and a half hours. As I recall, we had breakfast at some truck stop in Port Arthur, stopped for gas at some point just past Houston, ate lunch here at the Oakridge Smokehouse and that was it for stops, which is very unlike us.) As I recall, we had just missed the lunch buffet service, so we ordered off the menu. I had a platter of various smoked meats, which is pretty much the only thing I eat (other than kolache) whenever I'm in the hill country, and I particularly remember the brisket as being absolutely phenomenal. Good potato salad too. Details at www.oakridge-smokehouse.com
