Biscuits n' gravy

Best I ever had was about year and half ago-----------Doubletree Hotel in Charlottesville,Va.------breakfast buffet over Labor Day weekend---3 days in a row----addictively wonderful------------don't know if this recipe is standard in all Hilton family of hotels or unique to this location-------------I will try and find out and if am lucky will post!

I beg to differ DougS. You can make a good white gravy---Maybe it's a little off white but it can be done!

I some what agree Foodbme. I rate most food as good or edible; it is just that some is better than others. Browning the rue is that extra step of love.
 
White gravy is more like Bechamel just doesn't come across as good southern country cooking. Good gravy is a art, the same as good biscuits and it doesn't come from a mix. It comes from a good cooks love.

 

In my experience cooking and eating biscuits and gravy, browning of the white gravy results from taking the time to brown the flour in the drippings in the pan with the cooked sausage crumbles and stirring up the cooked on bits as you go. Not difficult, but just a little more time consuming.

My love of biscuits and gravy for breakfast came from my grandparents: she made the biscuits while he cooked the sausage and made the gravy. I ate it up and enjoyed the love.

Problem around here is, you can't find homade gravy anywhere. Even Hardee's uses a premix. There are biscuit places everywhere but they all use powdered gravy. Maybe for consistancy or for health reasons. Don't know. The wifes is pretty good though.

I personally think that McDonald's has some of the best biscuits n' gravy.  However, I have noticed that these are not offered in many McDonalds' outside of North Carolina.  Better than Hardees by a mile-- in my opinion.

I find it a little strange that someone who lives in the south thinks that McD's has good gravy.  When it comes to FF, I'm pretty tolerant, but McD's gravy is nasty.  I think they make it spicy to cover up the taste.  Apparently, some people like it.  They keep selling it.

My wife does the best sausage gravy  I've ever had. Those gals from east TN have the touch.

Mark, I was totally unaware of a biscuits AND gravy thread, or I wouldn't have started this one. 'Queperman, I have never heard of biscuits n' gravy at McDonald's; it's certainly not available at their outlets in this part of the country. Even if it was, there's no way that I'm gonna try it; after all, it IS McDonald's ( fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice..... )  

Several years ago, I had breakfast at Hathaway's coffee shop in downtown Cincinnati (reviewed by Michael Stern on this site).  They cooked the biscuits on top of a griddle -- they didn't bake them (or microwave them).  I've never seen that done before.
 
By the way, nocarolina, just out of curiosity:  in your original post, you painted a vivid picture of how awful the biscuits and gravy you were served were.  If they were that bad, why did you "force them down"?   Why didn't you send them back -- or just not eat them?

Haha. I figured I'd get some of this, but I really do like it.  I also think that Mc D's pancakes are pretty awesome...I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but I guess everyone's got their secret favorites. haha

You're right.  We all have our own strange tastes.  I like McD's pancakes too.

You know, rumaki, I've asked myself that question more than a few times since that morning. In retrospect, I probably should have sent that mess back and had them replace it with the ol' reliable sausage/eggs/taters. I've definitely learned from this experience, and in the future I won't just sit there and suffer in silence ( "Excuse me, waitress, but this sh** sucks." )
