Bizarre Foods: Tuscaloosa, AL to New Paltz, NY & Tuscaloosa to Indianapolis, IN Fri, 12/31/10 8:00 PM (permalink)
We regularly drive back & forth from Tuscaloosa, AL to New Paltz, NY & to Indianapolis, IN to visit family & stay sane by having interesting food destinations.  I've built myself a special Google map with prospective stops from Roadfood.com but am wondering if anyone can recommend more "Bizarre Food" type (think Andrew Zimmern) stuff along either route.  For instance, after trying the recommended country ham with red-eye gravy at Stan's in Columbia, TN, I went for the "pork brains & aigs."  It was awesome.  Would love more fun stuff like that to torment & gross out my kids with (just kidding on the torment/torture part...they're good sports as long as they can get some chicken tenders, spaghetti, or a burger while I eat "weird" stuff).

Thanks in advance!

There has got to be a Soul Food Rest. close to where you live for Chitterlings. Usually served once a week. Now you speak of Stan's here and can tell you they do Chitlins after Oct. Not on their regular menu. Also we lost fine rest in Columbia that did Rooster Fries. Meet 3 couples that drove from Memphis to enjoy the fries. as an appetizer and main meal. Rooster fries and gravy over rice is unreal. under T-Bone steak. Sorry for the website, only place that had their old menu.

Also know where to find them frozen, about 9 miles from me. $7.00/lb   2 /LB bags.

another place for rooster fries is in Nashville. The Stockyard but as an appetizer only. pricey
Do not know how you go to new york but around Roanoke, Va have found chitlins.
And if you really want to freak the kids get a can of Brains and put it with the other foods. Food Lions and Piggy wiggly sell them.

do you do sweetbreads, tripe. Even local butchers can get you tongue. we find it whole everywhere here.

Hey,forgot, in your neck of the woods the most authentic asian as far as being in AL.  Not americanized oriental.

They use to do whole eels, snails, pig ears. Haven't been in awhile.
I am still looking for a good asian restaurant that does Cock Combs.

Oriental Market & Restaurant    just got word a close relative off take has opened in Jackson,MS
Sauteed intestines and tripe are featured as in B'ham. Has anyone beside two friends of mine been there yet. by reports servers speak better english than in Al. Most of the good stuff in AL is posted on the walls and not on the menu. written in Chinese, with Pic.'s. The problem is with the broken english what is what.

Rotier's has good country food.  The chicken livers and gizzards might satisfy your appetite.
Get off I 40 at Exit 1A and go back E on West End about a mile and then turn left on 25th Ave. N just past Centennial Park take your 1st right on Elliston and Rotier's is just ahead. Have a great country meal there in one of Nashville's most well liked restaurants serving good seafood, steaks, sandwiches and plain ole good food in great atmosphere. Opens around 10:30 AM for lunch and dinner and closed on Sunday.

        Rotier's Restaurant @ 2413 Elliston Place, Nashville, TN 615 - 327 - 9892. http://www.rotiers.com/
