Black Friday in KY/Day Trip Wed, 12/3/08 9:50 PM (permalink)
On Black Friday, I usually take a day trip to shop in a small town, instead of going "big box" shopping. This year, Midway, KY was the choice.

Looking on-line for a restaurant that was open for lunch close by, and had a bar {a prerequisite}, I found the Woodford Inn in Versailles, KY.

The restaurant is called "Cleveland's"

The Bar:

I ordered shrimp & grits with a side of greens. In the first pic, the shrimp & grits had french fried onions on top.

Catfish, hush puppies & greens:

Greens don't photograph well:

Rt. 62 between Versailles & Midway is very scenic.

Midway, KY:

---------------------------------------------------------------------

We decided to take the scenic drive {Rt. 68} to Harrodsburg to the Beaumont Inn for drinks & appetizers, but when we got there, the bar wasn't open, and it was between lunch & dinner, so all we got to do was check out the gift shop.

Scenic ride:

Kentucky River:

The Beaumont Inn & Old Owl Tavern:

We ended up having chips & salsa & cocktails at a Mexican restaurant in Harrodsburg. [|)]

Our last stop was in Lexington for dinner {& drinks }. At this point is was dark & it was desperately bathroom time, so parking close to the establishment was mandatory. We were in downtown proper. Cheapside Bar & Grill fit the bill.

When I saw their menu, I was a little suspicious. It seemed like pseudo Mexican bar food. But I was pleasantly surprised by my entree.

Salad:

Grilled chicken breast with a roasted red pepper sauce & jack cheese, served over Mexican rice, with veggies & corn sticks with cinnamon butter. This was much better than I expected {except the carrots }

It ended up being a beautiful day. We got some unique Christmas gifts, saw some beautiful scenery, and had some good food. Much better than a mall!

      soozycue520,
Those along-the-railroad shots of the cute little town... are they of Midway or of Versailles? -- It looks like a decent-sized place.
      I just hadta ask.

Great photos! The Black Tulip in Midway is also very good -- glad you enjoyed the Woodford Inn!

          The town was Midway.

          AndreaB ~

The Black Tulip was closed until 3pm. We were too early.

          Thanks!

The shrimp and grits look interesting. Was it at all spicy? Did you eat the shrimp with your hands on order to get all the meat out of the tail, or is Cleveland's one of those places where utensils are highly encouraged?

Wasn't really spicy., but garlicky. The grits were cheesy. The gravy was red-eye. It was delicious!!

I don't think Cleveland's encourages eating with your hands, but I did pick up the shrimp tails!!

Yum!! I LOVE shrimp & grits.

It looks like a fine way to spend Black Friday! How far away from Cincinnati was that horse country in Kentucky? I like your food choices; they both looked great.

Now that's a totally sane way to spend Black Friday (other than just ignoring it altogether, which is my solution). Thanks for taking us along.

I like the fact that your first order of the day was to look for a restuarant with a bar...

What an interesting area. I feel that I'd need to dress up eating in those places. They hae an elegant look to me.

Glad that you had a nice day.

Beautiful pictures-I would like to see Kentucky one day. I know the Trappists make some lovely bourbon fudge in Kentucky. My mother sends me that every year and it is sooo good!!!
