Blood Orange Juice

When we were in Italy we fell in love with the orange juice we got made from the Blood Oranges. It looked like tomato juice, almost. We can find blood oranges(in season) here in New Jersey, but they're far too expensive to squeeze into juice. A few years ago.Tropicana made a blend with some blood orange juice in it...but I guess they stopped. Anyone ever seen this sweet, unique juice...or even tasted it anywhere?

We have plenty of blood oranges here in Florida and yes, it is very good. Still a higher price than buying your typical "juice" oranges though.

Dearfolk, While this orange will grow in Florida, it is native to the Mediterranean... the southern region of Spain, if I remember correctly. Although I've spent quite a bit of time in Florida, I can't recall ever having seen a blood orange. Grandpa Carlton didn't have any of those in his grove. I do know, though, that the juice and the pulp are almost bright red. As an aside, there is a variety of orange named Lue Gim Gong after the man who developed it by cross-seeding trees existing in Florida with those of his native China. He lived just west of DeLand in Volusia County, and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery in DeLand. This orange still bears the name of this "Chinese Burbank," and it is now classed as a variety of Valencia. Grandpa Carlton had quite a few of those trees, which are still propogated today. Orange you glad I told you that juicy tidbit? Banging My Gong Slowly, Ort. Carlton in Not-So-Subtropical Athens, Georgia.

Back in the '90s (the 1990s) I had to call blood oranges "moro oranges", which is the mediterranean variety. Diners were just too skittish to order any kind of salad or anything else with an ingredient called blood anything. The wimps....

You could have called it by it's Italian name and charged twice as much for it, Succo di Arancia Rossa. Ciao Jim

I bought two jars (a mistake) of The Barefoot Contessa's blood orange marmalade - really just awful stuff. It's sort of caramel color and tastes horrible.

Ort. Carlton: I lived in DeLand and Daytona back in the day- haven't been back in over 40 years. Went to DBJC for a couple of semesters. Stayed with an Aunt and Uncle and they had their own orange and lemon and banana trees....those were some delicious fruits! My Uncle raised orchids for a hobby....but I digress....DeLand, beautiful area before Disney moved into town....
