Blue Moon Cafe Thu, 01/22/09 4:15 PM (permalink)
After hearing so much about the Blue Moon Cafe on Diners and Drive-ins, we couldn't wait to get to Baltimore to try it.  So we went there on Sunday around 10:00 a.m.  Knew it was late to get a seat, but the hostess initially told us it was going to be about an hour and to check back in 45 minutes.  We huddled in our car and went back in one hour.  Now, she said to check back in 20 minutes.  Place is very small and only has 3 tables to accommodate 2 people.  Thus, at noon, a table became available and to our chagrine, it was right next to the door where people constantly stream in and out to give their name to the person in the "back" of the restaurant.
Aside from getting a chill, the table was barely big enough for our food.  My hubbie and I decided to share the cinnamon crunch french toast (described to the hilt on the show) and a cheddar and sausage omelette.  The latter came with the infamous hash browns and a huge bisquit.  However, before the order was taken, the waitress offered us a wonderful, warm cinnamon bun (made from the bisquit batter) to tide us over until the food arrived.  We gobbled that down and then were frankly almost filled.
The cheese and sausage omelette came with sausage gravy (just in case the blood in your arteries was still flowing freely).  I didn't care for the sausage gravy because it had a strange taste.  The omelette was a good size, but again nothing special.  Huge bisquit came with one pat of margarine--hardly enough to cover the subject.  The hash browns were good, but greasy.  Then appeared the french toast.  The description on TV sounded much better than the reality.  It was 3 slices of bread dipped in this crunch batter and stacked on the plate.  It was supposed to come with a nice layer of cream, but all I saw was a swirl of whipped topping directly from the can that melted instantly on contact with the french toast.  Some blueberries were on top of the toast and a few pieces of pineapple surrounded it.  We left most of the french toast because it was so sweet and because we were pretty full by that time.  We commented that we should have just shared the omelette and the delicious cinnamon bun.  We saw several folks come in just to get coffee and the cinnamon bun and we might do that next time if we take the trip to Baltimore some morning.
I would certainly never wait 2 hours for the likes of this food again, but I had to find out all the hipe for myself.  Prices were average or slightly above ($4.50 for the cinnamon bun).

I'm glad you went and found out for yourself though--I tend to kind of distrust what's on Diners and Drive-ins, I think just because I'm perverse.  They so overdo it that it puts my 'oh yeah?' antennas up.  So what tasted funny about the sausage gravy?

Not sure what was in the sausage gravy, but it tasted like chemicals!  Bob Evans gravy just as good and so are their bisquits!

Sorry for the bad experience. Sounds as if the gravy came out of a can, having to wait two hours certainly did not help.

Don't you think they are being overwhelmed with business after being on TV? I'm sure that would have an effect on the quality if they are trying to accommodate that many people in such a small space. I'd let some time pass, the crowds calm down and try them then.

Either that or sounds like the gravy hit a dish with something non-food in it.  Yeah, I'm with kland, I'd give 'em another try.
