Live music at McDonald's
On Thursdays, the S.C. 544 McDonald's brings out bluegrass and country music fans, such as Sidney and Norma Thompson of Myrtle Beach. They say they enjoy the fellowship and music, which they call "down-home good."
Thursday nights at McDonald's on S.C. 544, near Coastal Carolina University, have come to mean mostly country music mixed with some bluegrass numbers.
"This is something McDonald's is doing all over the country," said local band organizer Donna Llewellyn. "We play for the people. We love these folks here. We've all been in the music field at different times and in different places for pay. Now, we don't need this to live on. We just play because we love it, and that's true of all of us."
She said the present group started in February. Fans expressed their enthusiasm with applause for many traditional favorites. Bob Toppings of Conway is one of the musicians, playing a resonator guitar.
Toppings was with the Country Music Show house band in Nashville, Tenn., for seven years and also was on the road with Tex Ritter and Little Jimmy Dickens.
