Just wanted to share my sadness about Bo, my 11 and 1/2 year old golden retriever that we had to put to sleep today. He was very ill, so we are not unhappy with our decision, but he was such a loved dog.Our nieces and nephews came over to help us( he couldnt walk any more)and they were a good support to Bob and I; Bob is taking it especially hard because Bo went EVERYWHERE with Bob. Anyway, just wanted to share, as you all are my biggest supporters.

I am so sorry. Losing a beloved pet is so hard. But you can comfort yourself by thinking about not only how much joy Bo gave you, but how much joy YOU gave Bo. And you know you did the right, unselfish thing. Cold comfort, maybe, but nevertheless, the correct decision for all of you.

Thanks, rumaki. Bo, at the end, got up, pushed himself between us, and said thank you.The vet said it was the most poignant moment she has ever seen.He was loved entirely, but the right thing to do.

He was a good dog, and a great companion for both of you. I am so glad you had the holiday time with him before you did what had to be done. God Bless you and Bob and keep you thru this sad period. Bo will be at the Rainbow Bridge when you get there. AL

I'm sorry to hear that you had to have your dog put down. I can understand how it must feel. It's now been just over a year since I had to put mine down. She could barely walk, and was always in pain.

My ugly dog is 15 and is very active. I have often thought what I would do if she became disabled? I know I would help her as long as I could. I would give her pain medication if indicated. I know it must be painful to have your dog or any animal put down which is a nice way of saying "killed". I guess it is merciful but I just do not know if I could do it. I know it would rip my heart out. Before I got this dog, we had a English bulldog. She was more Judi's dog than mine although she tolerated me. She developed terminal cancer but fortunately she had a heart attack and passed away peacefully. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Ann, I am a lurker, read a lot, but never post here. But had to reply to yours. I know exactly how you are feeling and am sad for you. I have had some wonderful dogs and it hurts so much to lose them. Something I did (which my whole family enjoyed and which helped me) was to make a photo/story book, "To all the dogs I've loved before..." It helps to remember the good/funny times as well as what happened today.

Ann, I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved family member. Having lost many pets before, they become a part of the family and when they hurt, we hurt. Bo knows you loved him and was doing what needed to be done.

Ann, my best friend went through the same thing just last week. My heart goes out to you and Bob both. When you know it's time, it's time, but it doesn't get any easier. :(

We agonized over our decision since Christmas eve. He was the coolest dog-silly and obnoxious and loving.Paul-we were hoping he died at home, but his life was not his own anymore. He couldnt get up anymore. We had to carry him in to the vet in a sheet.Amazingly, Bo got up prior to being put to sleep, and stood between Bob and I, leaning against us, and let us love him.The vet was amazed. Anyway, thanks for all the thoughts-R.I.P., my Bo....

Sorry Ann........... Simple Message From Your Pet by Ken D. Conover To have loved and then said farewell is better than to have never loved at all. For all of the times that you stooped and touched my head, fed me my favorite treat and returned the love that I so unconditionally gave to you. For the care that you gave to me so unselfishly. For all of these things I am grateful and thankful. I ask that you grieve not for the loss but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched each other's lives. My life was fuller because you were there, not as owner, but as my friend. Today, I am as I was in my youth. The grass is always green, butterflies flit among fthe flowers and the sun shines gently down upon all of God's creatures. I can run, jump and play and do all of the things that I did in my youth. There is no sickness, no aching joints and no regrets and no aging. We await the arrival of our lifelong companions and know that togetherness is forever. You live in our hearts as we do in yours. Companions such as you are very rare and unique. Don't hold the love that you have within yourself. Give it to another like me and then I will live forever. For love never really dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as we are. Your pet in heaven.

Sorry Anne, I went through the same thing a couple of years ago. Hardest thing I have had to do, was to call the vet to have her come to the house to put Lucas, my12 yr old German Shorthair down. He went peacefully while I held him in my lap.

Ann, I'm sorry that you had to go through that pain today. Although today was difficult for you, remind yourself that you gave your dog the best of care and lots of love, which is more than what a lot of dogs get in this world, unfortunately. When I have had to have a pet put down in the past, I've taken solace in the fact that they always knew they were loved and had a great life. Your dog was very fortunate to have been a member of your family. I'm sure you and Bob would enjoy "Rescuing Sprite" by Mark Levin. A heartwarming story of a rescued dog and the impact he had on his family. A portion of the proceeds are donated to animal shelters. If you google it, you can read exerpts. I'm glad you shared and sought support here.

Ann, my deepest sympathies are with you, Bob, and your family. Our animals are often more than pets; they are members of the family, and I believe they remain so forever. I wish your family peace and comfort at this difficult time.

chewingthefat ann, I believe Bo is in this touching short tribute, I recommend everyone else watch it. http://www.indigo.org/rainbowbridge_ver2.html This is what I would have posted had I seen this sooner. xoxox Annie, I am so sorry & please give my regards to Bob as well. I know what you are going through. It will be a year in May & I am still sleeping with Stricken_Dachshund's blankie & Beanie Baby. I think the sorrow is stronger the longer you have had a pet. How do you love someone everyday for 11 years & then just act as if nothing happened? You can't!!! xoxox. For as much as you are hurting now, I know you would not trade the hurt for all the great times you had with Bo. Make sure you start writing down all the funny things he would do. It will help to heal your hearts. ((((((((((((((((((ANN & BOB))))))))))))))))))))))))

We are doing better, but my goodness Bo was such a vital part of our home! I found myself with bacon scraps today, and almost called Bo to get his treat.Old habits die hard. But we are reveling in good memories about that silly damn dog.
