John A The menu in the post above yours is typical of many non chains in the Daytona Beach area. If you're down this way I'll treat. Hey, I may just take you up on that! Here's a typical diner breakfast menu where I grew up back on Long Island, this place has been around for at least 40 years, most likely longer, although I believe the current owners took over in 1982. I believe they do serve breakfast all day but don't quote me on that. Here in Rhode Island, breakfast really isn't that much cheaper (maybe 10%) www.eastbayny.com/menu.html

John, Here in good ole' N.E.Pa. You will eat like a king at breakfast for between $4-$6, with coffee included on the higher end.

My husband has always loved Bob Evans-I find their food average. One reason I love visiting my father-in-law in Florida is that breakfasts are so inexpensive!!And you eat like a king...

OOPS http://www.eastbayny.com/ The menu shows it was established in 1982, I assume that is a current menu. That place in NY is cheaper than Bob Evans in Port Orange, FL. Two eggs with meat, home fries, toast, AND tomatoes is $5.25 there vs $7.41 with no tomatoes here. The cost of doing business there is a lot more then here.

Since Balthazar is certainly not an everyday destination, I figured I would chime in with a local diner menu. This happens to be one of the GREATEST diners on the planet. It was featured on the "Big Breakfasts" episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. We do not have any Bob Evans here, so I am not able to compare the two. However, I can certainly say that you will never go away hungry, or unhappy, here. Three eggs, toast, bacon, home fries, french fries or grits...$7.25. While comparable in price, I would bank on this place, to be the best place, every time. Brownstone Diner & Pancake Factory Jersey City NJ

CC- I've noticed a few stories on this diner in Jersey City...The start of my professional food service career. It was not there when I was in town. Have you ever eaten at Al's Diner on Communipaw? If so, how would you compare the two? Al's has been in business for about 50 years. The Brownstone is supposed to be famous for their pancakes amongst other items. But, the pancakes were featured on DD&D's. Shiwed the entire family involved in the business. It was an excellent show. $7.25 is reasonable in Northern NJ for a breakfast. But, it's high in Daytona..That's John A's point I believe.

I agree with John 100%. Considering that the cost of an extraordinary & larger meal, at a family-run place (a family who will convince you that you are their family, when you are their patrons) in NJ, is the same price paid for a smaller meal, at a chain, in Florida, makes me think that $7.41 is expensive, considering the vast differences, and a comparable price. For that $7.25 I am always sure to get 45 minutes of great conversation, laughs, and I will leave with some free spinach pie, or soup because "I do not eat enough". We do not go to Al's, anymore. It is just not the same, as it used to be. The last time I was there, it took over 30 minutes, for a burger and cheese fries (even though it was 9 pm, and almost empty), and the cheese was still attached to the paper. So, I had a LONG talk with the manager, who gave my waitress a very hard time, about a mistake which was not her mistake. So, Al's is a no go, until they get the act together, again. The food is usually great (USUALLY), but the management is hurting the atmosphere, and the business. No "good" diner in NJ, should EVER be that empty. A shame.

I must say their prices have gone up, but I really like their sausage gravy. They have many places around here that cost alot less for Breakfast, and are quite good. The sausage gravy at Bob's is pretty good IMHO

I've found, pricing aside, that the Bob Evans you visit determines quality & service. I've been to several throughout the US, and only like one, lol. There is one in Woodbridge, VA where my parents live where the cooks and the staff almost never changes (for breakfast at least) and we have not had bad coffee, service or food. I am NOT a breakfast eater, but if Bob Evans was cheaper or someone else was footing the bill (lol) I could learn to be. Much better, IMO than Denny's & Ihop. Have not yet tried Waffle House, so will withhold judgement on that.
