My wife and I were out and about a couple of nights ago and decided to go to Bob Evans to do breakfast for dinner. Two eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast, no beverage, was $7.41. I know breakfast is the big money maker for these places but that seems a little excessive to me.

At the diners around us, it is $3.95 for 2 eggs, potatoes, and choice of bread. Consider yourself lucky!

Don't care for them. They are big into those skillet meals and of course their sausage.

If it is $7,41 for two people then that is very good, but on the other hand if it is just one breakfast, I would tend to agree, it is accessive.

Yeah, Bob Evans has gotten ridiculous on pricing.. last time we went for breakfast it was $19.xx I got 2 blueberry pancakes, hash browns and a soda. She got 3 pancakes, scrambled eggs w/ cheese, 4 pcs of bacon, apple juice, coffee and toast. (guess who the breakfast eater is, lol)

Back in the 1980s, I used to have breakfast and dinner occasionally at Bob Evans; back then, the food was pretty decent. Unfortunately, in the last couple of decades, the quality of their food has gone downhill, and I finally gave up on the chain. Bob Evans seems to have pretty much disappeared from the Chicago area. The one here in Lansing called it quits about three years ago, and the building was just recently torn down.

leethebard - I share your feelings about breakfast at Waffle House. Lunch and dinner at WH sure are nothing to get excited about, but breakfast is another matter. Delicious sausage patties and country ham, plus good hash browns and eggs done right. They just recently added biscuits and gravy to the breakfast menu; not bad for a chain. I would definitely consider Waffle House to be a roadfood stop for the morning meal. Just wish they had a few in NE Illinois; the closest ones to Chicagoland are in Indianapolis.

John A: You need to get out more often! That's not a bad price in today's environment for a chain restaurant. 2 years ago, the price of that meal would have been in the $5-6 range. 2 years from now that meal will be $9-10!!!!! Most people can't afford to eat out as often today and restaurants costs are going thru the roof! Why do you think restaurants are closing at an unprecedented rate?? In the Phoenix area, breakfasts range between $5-10 for the most part, depending on the place and what you order.

CC- Perhaps that's why John lives in Florida..I know it's the reason I do... I know John wanted breakfast at dinner, but I just wanted to announce McDonald's now has 2 Sausage Egg McMuffins for $2.00. It's a pretty darn good product, too. Their sausage patties are top quality..They can afford to be with the volume they do. Eggs are eggs. English muffins are English muffins. Personally, I think McDonald's does breakfast better than anything else they offer. It's the only thing I will actually intentionally go to eat there. Unless I have no other choice for lunch or dinner, I'm not eating there. Hey, lots of people love Cracker Barrel and I believe you can get breakfast served all day there. too. I've been there twice and was ok, but it's a bit pricey like Bob Evan's.

I hear ya...BB Just throwin' in a little comparable "sticker shock" report, from NYC. Well, from NJ to NYC. Forgot to mention the $8 toll for the Holland Tunnel, and $20 for parking.

I don't think there's any way round paying less than $5.00 for breakfast unless you elect not to order coffee. Here in the Daytona Beach area, they have many Ma and Pa places that advertise two eggs with potatoes and toast for say $3.00. But they charge you $1.50 for coffee so with tax and tip... Friendly's has a decent breakfast special here for under $4.00 but same thing again. For a sit down breakfast..Hey, they have to pay the rent. But yes, places like Bob Evans are more. You know John, I think a better bet would have been Rossi's Diner where you can get breakfast all day, too. I think they have the best breakfast around and I'm pretty sure it is less than what Bob Evans charged you. I wish Rossi's was closer to where we live. I like that place. Hey I liked your post. Very interesting. Good job.

We don't have either Bob Evans or Waffle House here, but both are about an hours drive away in Kansas City - we much prefer Waffle House. My Wife likes their omlettes and waffles and I like to have waffles and grits, and their sugar-free syrup is good.

Jack In The Box serves Breakfast all day and they have a wide variety of products available. You can get a significant number of items for under $5. I realize they're not all over the country but if you have them in your area, give them a try

Bob Evans is a better choice for breakfast than Denny's. Better quality, IMO. Waffle House is still my favorite.

Waffle House sugar free syrup is so good we buy it from them 3-4 at a time every few months!

With the economy being what it is, in these times, lots of people can't afford to eat out. The big chain restaurants will be the first to bite the bullet. You can usually tell when a business is finacially in trouble, prices go up and portions go down. The Mom & Pop diners may make a comeback yet.

Todays featured diner has two eggs, meat, potatoes, and toast for $3.95. A far cry from $7.41.

As you all know, I don't frequent chains but what caught my attention was the opinion that $7.41 is too expensive for a breakfast. I'm not sure what decade (or century) you're all living in, but I think thats a fantastic deal. I expect to pay at least $8-10 for a decent (not huge) breakfast, the only time I expect to pay around $5 is if I go to a coffee house (not coffee shop) and get a coffee and a muffin.

The menu in the post above yours is typical of many non chains in the Daytona Beach area. If you're down this way I'll treat.

You said you went to Bob Evans for dinner. I don't think that the place you posted would offer the same food for the same price at the dinner hour.

Two eggs with toast $1.75 Two eggs with toast & home fries 2.55 __________ Cost of home fries + .80 cents Two eggs with toast & meat 3.50 Cost of home fries .80 __________ Two eggs, toast, home fries, meat $ 4.30 Still a far cry from $ 7.41 I do not doubt that $7.41 may be reasonable in some places but around here there are a hell of lot more places in the $4.00 - $5.00 range.

My point was that most places that offer these types of breakfast specials aren't even open for dinner. I don't live too far from you, and I cannot imagine that the economy is that drastically different here. Most "diners" around here do not serve breakfast all day - because, while it may be a profit center, it can also be labor intensive and take up real estate on the grill that could best be used for something else. The more I think about it, I cannot think of one place that is locally owned that serves breakfast all day. The only places I have seen that offer breakfasts all hours are the big corporations - Denny's, Bob Evans, Waffle House, etc. I think that Toojay's also offers a limited selection of their breakfast items (notably, a four-egg omelet, which is sure to run more than just $4) all day.

Rossie's Diner in So Daytona is one that comes to mind. You can get breakfast anytime. Typical NJ type (no, it is not as good as a NJ diner, but not bad) diner. We have a lot of indy places that specialize in breakfasts, who do not open for dinner at all. Just BK and lunch. They will offer a breakfast special from say 6 to 8 am or some places 6 to 10. Usually just two eggs, grits or potatoes and toast...Coffee is always extra. WJ - Actually, $7.41 is expensive in this part of Volusia County. Daytona Beach and So Daytona are not a well to do towns. We have lots of places that offer what will eventually wind up in the $5.00 range..
