Bob Feller dies at 92 Thu, 12/16/10 8:34 AM (permalink)
Since Michael Hoffman and I will probably be the only ones to remember Rapid Robert or Bullet Bob  the rest don't have to read this obit-----------
BUT---Bob Feller was a farm boy from Iowa who threw the ball 100 mph back when 80 was fast and he had a curve that went clear round the batter----great pitcher.  Hall of Fame guy and a gentleman to boot.  RIP Bob.

The only time I ever saw Bob Feller pitch in person was at the Polo Grounds. It was an exhibition game between the Giants and a U.S. Navy team. Feller, of course, pitched for the Navy.  I can still remember marveling at how high up in the air his left leg would go on his windup.

Feller had quite a high left leg, but how about Spahnie's right leg?

Pork Beaks----Spahn was a great pitcher too.  Didn't win a game til after
his service in the Army during WW2 --- he won a Bronze Star for bravery. Won his first game at 25.

Pitched for Boston with a guy named Johnny Sain---they won the World Series in 48 with the pitching rotation of Spahn and Sain and 2 days of rain.

Another guy with a high kick was Juan Marichal, ask Michael about him.

Even though I never had the privilege to watch him pitch, I have long admired Bob Feller.  A true gentleman indeed!  They have a museum dedicated to him in his hometown of Van Meter, Iowa.

Actually, it was Spahn and Sain and pray for rain.

Though you're all older and wiser than I'll ever be, my uncle was big Braves fan and had a clipping from the Boston Post with the following dity:

First we'll use Spahn, then we'll use Sain.
Then an off day, followed by rain.
Back will come Spahn, followed by Sain,
And followed we hope, by two days of rain.

After the article, it became Spahn and Sain and pray for rain

              In Pace Requiescat Bob Feller.

Holy Smoke Michael I was right.
Praying for rain was what the guys dancing around the camp fire out west were doing.  In proper Boston they only hoped for 2 days of rain, and if it only fell on Fenway-----'twould be a sign from Heaven.   Saints preserve us.

I never got to see him pitch but became familiar with him because of frequent stories about him in the newspapers when i lived near Cleveland. His service to his country cost him even more spectacular career stats. i respected him greatly.
