Bon Ton Mini Mart closing???

In the December 2008 Roadfood newsletter, Jane & Michael strongly hinted that the Bon Ton Mini Mart in Henderson, KY may be closing soon. They suggested that if you haven't been there before, get there pdq. Does anyone know what the story behind this is? I know I haven't been there yet, so now I am going to try and get there as soon as possible.

Louis-
You are our expert around that area.....do you know what is going to happen to the place?

If you make it there before the closing date, give us a report on the chicken AND the Kool-Aid pie!

As I understand it, the future of the Bon Ton Mini Mart is up in the air. It may have a future. It may not. What will happen is that the owner, George Markham, will be retiring in a couple of years; I don't know what will happen to the restaurant after that. The cook, Donna King, who owns the fried chicken recipe, told me that she would decide eventually what to do. She really didn't want to discuss it. I'd say the best course of action for all concerned is to just come by and see why so many people rave about the chicken. You won't be sorry.

If anyone would know, I knew it would be you. Thanks for the inside information.

I'm not going to procrastinate. I've heard too many great things about this place over the years.

Funny you should mention the Kool-Aid pies. I requested them because their pies were usually too sweet for me. So every few weeks the owner's daughter will make a Kool-Aid pie for me. Other people eat them, too. We've found--through trial and error--that cherry, strawberry, and orange work the best. Lemon does, too, to some extent. I had a lime pie last week; it was OK--and much better than the punch flavored pie, which was the only real flop of the bunch--but the flavors I mentioned first were the most successful.
