Bottled Lemon Juice Wed, 09/22/10 12:28 PM (permalink)
Of all the different products Supermarkets offer, I've bought most of them at one time or another, never bottled Lemon juice, anyone use this stuff? If so, for what? Lemonade? Fish? Is it any good?

It's acceptable in most recipes, but I don't use it on anything where I would taste just that like fish.  It's kinda like using bottled minced garlic instead of mincing fresh...it'll work, but it's not the same.

I use Real Lemon brand in a glass of ice water in the summer and then heated with honey (and sometimes a shot of whiskey) and water for a sore throat. I have used it for a fish marinade depending on the kind of fish.

Bottled lemon juice almost invariably is sulfited.  I'm sensitive to sulfites, so I never use it.

I'm sure they haven't, but your recipes would probably taste even better if you used fresh lemon juice.

I use the bottled Lemon and the Bottled Lime Juice all the time (here in Indiana). I miss our cheap fresh Lemons in SoCal, but the bottled juice does a fine job in iced beverages, on fish, and in desserts of various types.

I've heard that argument also.  And while I can say you're probably right, I will also add that my recipes taste a lot better with bottled than if I never made them at all because the cost of fresh lemons and limes is prohibitive where I live and they don't last very long.

My wife has a bottle of lemon juice in the fridge but I have no idea what she uses it for. It looks old.  We also have fresh lemons in there, so maybe it's for some sort of Lemon Emergency.

It is probably there in case somebody stabs one of the lemons with a knife, in order to give the lemon a transfusion to keep it from bleeding to death.

Boy, you're not kidding. Since I had a bottle of lemon juice in my pantry, after reading this thread (but unfortunately before you posted your warning) I made up some lemonade with it. I just took my first sip. It's not awful, exactly, but the taste is definitely off. Oh well, live and learn, I guess.

I grew up with it, but I wouldn't let it near my beverages or food now.  Frankly, after becoming used to fresh juices, I find the bottled lemon and lime juices just awful.

I keep it for emergencies when I need lemon juice and don't have lemons. It is not as good as fresh, but it beats the heck out of running to the store in a driving rain storm.

I generally use it only for a dash in a hot cup of Earl Grey, since most of the time I wouldn't be inclined to cut up a whole lemon for one or two cups a night in the cold months.

Whole Foods has a store brand lemon juice that is worth checking out.

I use it in recipes where there are multiple ingredients to blend in with it like cocktail sauce for Shrimp Cocktail. I don't use it as a sole ingredient like on fish or to make lemonade.
My next door neighbor has a big lemon tree. Hundreds of Lemons every year. In season, we juice the lemons and pour the juice into Ice Cube Trays or small containers and freeze them for later use. Just take out what you need and defrost them.
