This might sound crazy in the middle of the summer, but Ms OC and I decided to bake bread today

It's not crazy.  My grandfather got up every Saturday at 4AM to bake bread.  My mother baked bread every-other Saturday.  I didn't eat sliced bread until I went to college.
Show us pics of the finished product!

Did you use a bread machine?  I've never used one.  I always knead by hand.

What we are making is the Kitchen Aid basic white bread recipe.  We used the dough hook to mix and knead.

What we made last year came out well.  I hope today's will as well.

Boy, does it.  I can just see (and taste) it smeared with real butter, so simple, and some coffee or tea.

When I was a kid, spending a week or two at my grandparents' house was the highlight of the summer.  The highlight was Saturday morning when Gramps would bake bread and my cousins and I would have "blue cheese and coffee" for breakfast.  Gramps would save some bread dough, braid it, fry it and serve it to us with a cup of sugar for dunking, gorgonzola cheese (looked "blue" to us) and a cup of percolator coffee that walked out of the pot.  We dunked the fried bread into the coffee, then the sugar, take a bite, then a bite of cheese.  WOW!  It was SO GOOD.

That does sound good.  We have Ms OC's homemade apple butter and home made strawberry jam.
The bread is in the oven now.  Boy does it ever smell good in here!!!

Breadmaking is an art. I can't imagine ever using a bread machine or even a mixer just to make a loaf or two. I have to feel the dough.

I remain in awe of people who can make anything other than quick bread. Yeast and I have what would best be described as a combative relationship. I do fairly well winging it with buttermilk quick breads and rolls, but I miss when my dad would make bread. Bread machines come close, but they're not the same. And I still fail miserably because they require yeast...words cannot explain how inept I am when it comes to yeast.

I agree.  It is indeed an art.  In my Italian family it was passed down from generation to generation.  My great-grandmother would get up at 4AM on Sundays so we would have FRESH bread with our fantastic meal.  MH once told me, "I have a bread machine."  I replied, "I do too.  As a matter of fact I have TWO!  They're called HANDS."

The bread came out different this time.  It is not bad, as a matter of fact it is delicious, just different.  The crust is darker, it did not rise as much and the bubbles are bigger.  But the bottom line is that this bread is very good.

It looks good but it does look different than the first picture.  I'm sure it tastes great and that's all that matters!
