I had a tremendous amount of respect for the man and he was incredibly fun to watch play. His streak of consecutive starts by a quarterback is something that will most likely never be broken. And considering the year the Packers had in 2007, it is great to see him leaving on a high note and on his own terms. He will definitely be missed!

Although there has been media speculation in the past, I believe this is the first time Favre has officially retired.

I'm glad, after his fiasco in Atlanta, he was able to buckle down and live up to his potential and have a fantastic career at Green Bay which helped to re-ignite the sleeping giant, bringing a championship back to Green Bay after years of drought and a new winning tradition.

1-5 against the Bears the past 3 seasons and outplayed by both Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman. I can see why retirement might be attractive. Brad

What was the fiasco in Atlanta? I think scorereader is referring to Favre being drunk a lot, showing up to practices and meetings hungover, etc. Also, if I recall correctly his first pass was a touchdown to the opposition-he played very poorly. I too am going to miss Favre-my husband is a lifelong Packer fan-his dad's high school football coach was Vince Lombardi. I enjoyed watching Favre play-his toughness is something you do not see from too many quarterbacks today-imho. We made the trek to Lambeau twice from New Hampshire to see him and the Packers play and wow what an experience to be in Green Bay for a Packer game-absolutely nothing like it. Nicolem

I think Farve was the epitome of the NFL quarterback. I like the face that he wasn't a blow-dired, self-important, sound bite. I also enjoyed that he really looked like he was having fun out there...it is a game after all.

Nicolem right nicolem! He was a mess. Not to mention the coach at Atlanta (Glanville) didn't want him when he was drafted, which led to many problems.

Farve was a great Q-back and will be missed by fans all over--not just Green Bay---the man is a class act and in the last few years he gave alot of his confidence to a team that was talented---even if the rest of us didnt think so-but young and undisciplined---and he helped guide them to a first rate NFL team. I will miss him and so will his teammates. I look forward to his entry to the Hall of Fame.

Based on his past history it could be argued that more impressive than his football career is how he's matured as a person. He's come a long way from his younger days; there are some parts of Deanna Favre's book that don't put him in the best light. I've read some less-than-pleasant comments from fans of other NFC North teams but I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that if he'd played for any of them those same fans would be 180 degrees from where they are now. I think he would have played if all he got was rent money. His enthusiam, excitement and pure enjoyment, more than his records, made him a legend. He was Green Bay and Green Bay was him.

I don't know who you are trying to quote, but I think your perception is way off base. While Favre did make a lot of money playing football, he played because he loved the game.

The ESPN boys were saying that "nobody tried hard enough to make him stay" meant that the Packers wouldn't reach out to some strong free agency help (specifically Randy Moss) to help him make another strong run at the super bowl.

I think this is the quote you heard. It was from Favre's agent: "I talked to Brett this morning and I told him, 'Nobody forced you to make this decision to retire, but the flip side is nobody encouraged you to play,'" Cook told Mortensen. "Two years ago, Ted [Thompson] encouraged him to play, but there was nothing this time around from them offering encouragement or him to come back." It may be an accurate quote FROM THE AGENT, but I don't see a reference to money. Mike McCarthy disputes some of the other stuff about Randy Moss that the agent said, so why give much credence to the agent expressing Favre's sentiments. Sure, it's about money--TO THE AGENT, but not Favre.

Only the Agent loves money, not Brett! Face it, he's an athlete and they didn't make it worth his while to come back. Waaah!

He probably has all the money he will ever need and when he reaches age 50, maybe now for that matter, he will probably wish he had retired 5 or more years sooner. He sounds like a guy who finally got fed up with the constant pounding and pain. Football might be fun but you can only take so much. He had one of his best years. I think had he done as well the year before he would have retired then. He went out on top and his team did a lot, lot better than preseason predictions. He evidently didn't think luck would be with him another year because he didn't think the team this coming season was capable of going to the SuperBowl. BTW, Randy Moss can only get you so far witness the 1998 Vikings and 2007 Patriots. He always manages to quit before the end.

I think your posts are a case of a Viking fan who's more interested in disparaging Favre than accepting the fact that he's one of the best ever. Shame on you!

To Bears' fan, Why don't you compare Brett's 17 seasons as a Packer with all 23 Bears quarterbacks in the same time period? Orton and & Grossman have shown some improvement and the Bears did win a super bowl. That is a big deal. However, can you name any of Brett's records that either of them are on track to catch or break, even in the next 10 years? I can't tell you on how many different web chat sites from literally all over the world over the course of his career I've heard positive comments about Farve. Granted he's not a Michael Jordan, but where American football is concerned he is the top dog.

Our family has had 10 season tickets to Bears games since the mid-50's. We're as die-hard as you can get. But I can tell you that most Bears fans have the utmost respect for Brett Favre and the way he plays. We would have loved to see him in a Bears uniform, and he is one of the reasons why the Bears/Pack rivalry still exists. A buddy of mine is on the Pack board of directors, and I've been up to Lambeau many times. I enjoy going to Soldier Field in Chicago, but Lambeau is a special place unequaled by any venue in the country. As far as Neesie goes, don't worry about her. Viking fans generally show up in the middle of the first quarter and leave before the end of the fourth- and that's when the team is winning. Biggest fair-weather fans outside of California. And they play in a dome to boot. Viking fans aren't known for their football knowledge, or any knowledge for that matter. Remember, these are the same people that elected a professional wrestler to run their state. But, they have Tarvaris Jackson. He's just as much of a threat as Favre ever was.
