i heartily agree with bacon thins
there was also another nabisco cracker in the early 80s(i think) that was shaped like a fried chicken leg,not a flat cracker but puffed up, flavored like chicken of course

apple newtons-tasted like tiny apple pies

and my favorite discontinued food, also from the early to mid 80s, was pepperidge farm frozen puff pastry vegetable side-dishes.
they were vegetables wrapped in a circle of puff pastry that you heated in the oven. they had broccoli and cheddar, asparagus, mushroom, and were absolutely delicious. i think every food is improved by being wrapped in puff pastry

I didn't know they'd stopped making Apple Newtons..... Don't think I ever ate any....

Don't know the Pepperidge Farm products you wrote about but we used to fill their frozen pastry shells with canned or frozen Chicken a'la King. Yum!

As for the crackers, weren't they Chicken in a Biskit? They still make those..... http://tinyurl.com/ys2dl5

I wish they made all the stuff they used to make, and would stop making the stuff they do now.

Why do I also get the feeling many of those early and discontinued products we're talking about werte better and better made than modern counterparts...seems pride in workmanship is seriously lacking today!!

bosco lover, I loved those crackers!! they weren't chicken in a biskit tho, what were they called? this will drive me CRAZY!! I did a little search in the dessert forum for Sara Lee banana cake YUM!! but we found out they only exist in australia soo sad does anyone remember something in the 70's that was like kool-aid but it was chocolate flavored? It might have been called choco chill or chilly choco, and it was DISGUSTING but oh, how I loved it!

definitely not chicken in a biskit-they were shaped like chicken drumsticks and were a medium golden brown color, not light colored like chicken in a biskit. they were so tasty but i cant remember the name of them

i also used to love nabisco vegetable thins, and was so excited when they brought them back, but the flavor did not match my memory at all. i suspect they changed the recipe, or maybe some things just taste better in your mind

You have to let whatever you're spreading on them get to room temperature.

Re:Bring Back Discontinued Products - HYDROX AND MYSTIC MNT COOKIES 2009/07/18 14:16:23 (permalink)
Do you know about "Hometownfavorites.com"?  It's an online grocery that sells hard-to-find products.  Some of the things you remember might be available there.  They don't sell substitutes or taste-alikes.  They only sell products that are currently being made, though not sold everywhere. Bosco is one of them.

One of my favorite hard-to-finds is Heinz Sweet Gherkins.  I've put in a request with Hometown Favorites to stock them.  BTW:  Hometown Favorites has a list of discontinued products, and one for renamed products.  One favorite of mine was Kraft "Old English" cheese slices.  Kraft still makes it under a new name, "Deli Select Sharp Cheddar".  Miss the "Old English" name, but the cheese is as good as ever.

Two discontinuted favorites:  Hydrox cookies and Nabisco Mystic Mint.  Just learned today that Keebler brought out Hydrox original recipe last year for a limited time.  I DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT, AND I'M DEVASTATED! :)

Nabisco Mystic Mints were like big Girl Scout cookies--the Thin Mints.  FFV (Fine Foods of Virginia) also made a similar cookie.

Remember Sealtest ice ceam?

Pepperidge Farm made a wonderful whole wheat bread in the '60's called "Hovis".  I visited the PF factory in Norwalk CT back then and Mrs. Rudkin still owned it.  She met us at the door wearing a lovely corsage.  After the tour we were each given a loaf of warm Hovis bread.  There was something special about it, and it was delicious!  We ate it for years until it was discontinued.  At one time they even made Hovis sugar cookies.  The Pepperidge Farm factory no longer gives tours, but if you drive down Hill's Lane you can smell the break baking--heaven!

Hey, I remember Chocomint LIfe Savers, and wondered if they were still being made.  The first time I had them (must have been 6 or 7) I thought chocolate and peppermint would be a strange combination.  They were delicious!  :)

The New York Times had an aarticle about Cadbury's.  The real British is apparently way better than what they sell in the U.S  Our Cadbury is made by Hershey's.  The article explained that Cadbury sold its recipe to foreign countries which adapted it to local taste.  That's why an Amiercan Cadbury bar doesn't taste like a British one.  Ever been to Switzerland and tasted a Nestle bar?  It's wonderful--more like Lindt or Tobler.

Land O'Lakes actually used to make a boxed macaroni & cheese mix like Kraft. Unlike Kraft, it was not that garish orangey color, and still just as cheesariffic. They stopped making it. :(

You can buy Five Alive here in Texas, because I just bought two cans at the H.E.B.Grocery store in Universal City, it was in the frozen juice aisle.

I wish Keebler's would bring back their flour tortilla chips that were around in the late 1980s,early 90s. They weren't greasy or anything, were crisp and light.
Yeah I too loved Turkish Taffy as a kid.
The modern Fizzies are nowhere near as good as the ones I grew up with as a kid.

At Hometown Favourites I see some things that some of the stores carry by me.H.E.B. now carries again B &M baked beans. They didn't for a long time.

Kraft Oil & Vinegar Dressing from the '70s and '80s.  Loved the stuff so much I could drink it from the bottle.
