Brioschi Fri, 05/5/06 8:52 PM (permalink)
The last message on "Peppermint Balls" reminded me of a favorite (wierd) "treat" from my Italian grandmother. Brioschi! These sort of tiny curly tablets were supposed to be antacids, sort of like mini-alka seltzer, but I remember as kids were loved to pop a few in our mouths and let them fizzle. This was supervised by our grandmother of course. It was only when I was an adult I realized that brioschi was really not "grown-ups candy."

Now, was our family deranged or did anyone else love these "treats"?

With all credit to the great Grampy:

    Eat too much?
    Drink too much?
    Try Brioschi,
    Take Brioschi.

      Boy, do I remember Brioschi!
A ubiquitous cure-all in my grandparents' house for any kind of indigestion.
But it was always taken dissolved in a glass of water...I loved it because it tasted like a really fizzy lemon-lime soda (and not too sweet, unlike Sprite and 7-UP!)

I can get it here in Ohio at our local Italian grocery store. It works really well for the times when I have too much chili, but I never thought of just eating the little curls. I think there is still some Brioschi in the house. Will give it a try--in any case, it's cheap entertainment!

In Dallas, Brioschi is available at "Jimmy's Italian Deli". Which, BTW, also has the VERY BEST (made on premises) Italian sausage!
