Brisket Basket, St. Petersburg FL Fri, 03/16/07 12:29 PM (permalink)
One of my neighbors, who knows I am a BBQ nut, told me a new little place had opened called the Brisket Basket. It is an old drive-in restaurant right across from St. Pete High on 5th Ave. N. Well, even though it is tax season, I forced myself to take today off to run some errands and have lunch at BB. And while it is not truly a BBQ-only place, I was not quite sure where else to post it.

Even though it was raining when I drove up, this was not a sign of bad things ahead. I walked in and was nicely greeted by the owners. As you can imagine, most of their menu is based on brisket. Brisket sandwich, brisket burger, brisket meatloaf, brisket chowder, etc. One of the offerings is called the Triple Slider Sampler. It is three "slider" size sandwiches with sliced brisket on one, meatloaf on another and brisket burger on the third. With a pickle slice, french fried onions and a chipolte mayo on each, they went down real easy. The sliced brisket was nicely tender and a good flavor. And the chipolte mayo set it off nicely.

You get one side with this and I choose the hot brown german potato salad. I also got an extra side green chile hominy. A winner on both.

You can check out their menu on their website which is:

http://www.brisketbasket.com/

I will definitely be back as I like this place. And I am not associated with or obtain any profits from this restaurant.

This is a nice addition to St. Pete. And definitely a Roadfood type of place.

John

Sounds interesting, RibDog. What is a brisket burger though?

Wow, something a little different in the way of a Que joint I would say. Since Mrs QFan and I get up to the Tampa Bay area periodically, we'll definitely add this to our list of RF spots to check out. Thanks!

A brisket burger is fresh ground brisket hand formed into a patty. I do this quite often at home when I can get the point off of a packer or whole brisket. Mighty fine eating.

What a nifty menu. The artwork is fantastic. I will definitely have to drive by there in the next few days. Thanks for the tip. Incidently, what's the reputation of the BBQ place that's attached to the Biff's hamburger place on 49th St.? --BTB

Sounds like a plan to me. See you then.

I have not eaten there for quite a while but I have not heard any stellar comments about it.

I ate at Georgia Boy BBQ up in Oldsmar a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. This is a small place on a side road but he cooks with just wood and no rub that I can ascertain. It is what I call "unadulterated" which can be very good if cooked correctly.

I ate at Biff's just a few days ago, but it was a cheeseburger and fries. Did walk over to check out the bbq side of the place but other than the fact that it looked very laid back, did not pay attention to what was being served. I put it on my list for a return visit someday to try the sliced brisket.

One goes to Biff Burger and its sister BBQ joint for the scene- ageing hippies, bikers, families, live music (sometimes), dancing to the jukebox, old cars , etc. They serve a pretty good hamburger of the type that was common everywhere in the 50s and 60s. The BBQ sandwich is OK, but not worth a special trip. We try to get there at least once each year while we are in St Pete to enjoy the scene and that requires either a hamburger or a BBQ sandwich.

We like the eastern N. C. style BBQ at The Butlers way up on 9th Street about 92nd ave. Avoid Fred Flemings.

                              Cheers, John
