Brooklyn NY Thu, 02/10/11 1:30 PM (permalink)
Iwanago and I wanted to visit Brooklyn, NY just for the adversity of food and in particular Brighton Beach because of the ethnicity.  The area appealed to me because I had visited NYC many times and I wanted something extremely different.  Perhaps some of you that know the area could give me some advice.  I understand that some of the areas speak no English.

Several of our posters know the area very well.

Hi Sundancer, wish I had some recs for you, but Brighton Beach/Little Odessa is somewhat out of my wheelhouse.  If you're looking for some other Brooklyn/Coney Island ideas I might have a few for you.  When are you and Iwanago thinking of coming up?

Not so much what time of year you go, but the later at night it gets, the rowdier the Russian Nightclubs get. So I've been told, I'm a daytime man myself. Been there a few times, and liked this place the best:

Yes, it's a nautical themed Russian Restaurant and Beer Hall, supposedly modeled after an original in Odessa.

After eating you must take a walk along the boardwalk, it's really like being in another country.

I never found much of a language problem, money talks in the restaurants. The M&I Internation Food Store a few blocks away at 249 Brighton Beach Avenue is quite an international trip, but there I've found it almost impossible to communicate. Just point and hope for the best if you want to take home any food souvenirs.

While you're in the area, if you have a car, just a couple miles away is Sheepshead Bay, which is an mix of Russian and old Seafood places (Randazzo's is the best, we think). And the Lundy's Market in the old Lundy's Building (1901 Emmons Ave.) is better than M&I, a great array of International food. Sheepshead Bay is also an interesting area for a walk, with the Day Fishing boats coming and going along the inlet.

        Enjoy.

Thanks Ken, the menu looks very interesting and I appreciate the advice on the boardwalk.  I hope to get there this late spring.  I wish I could afford a guide

I tried Roll N Roaster after seeing their corny late night commercial back in the mid 70s(?) and enjoyed seeing it again on their website. Liked them a lot. Roast Beef, Cottage Fries with Cheese, Lemonade and Rolling Rock beer (back in the day, I think). I've gone back a couple of times in the last five years when I was near the area, but didn't find a parking spot in their small and twisty lot. I will go again prepared with a more patient attitude towards finding a spot and walking a little bit.

Also, you might enjoy exploring the Polish areas of Greenpoint. Bakeries, delis, and restaurants that are like the polish versions of plate lunch, or meat and three places.
