Brown’s Chicken filed Chapter 11

CHICAGO — A chain of chicken restaurants that made national headlines in 1993 when seven employees at one of its suburban Chicago stores were killed has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Brown’s Chicken & Pasta Inc. filed on Tuesday — two months after a DuPage County judge ordered the company to pay more than $800,000 to a former vice president and minority shareholder who’d filed a wrongful termination lawsuit.

"They couldn’t pay the judgment," said the company’s attorney, Richard Golding, who said that $300,000 of that amount was due by Tuesday of this week. "It would have made the company insolvent."

In its petition for bankruptcy, the Elmhurst-based company said that while it had assets between $100,000 and $500,000, it also had 50 to 99 creditors and liabilities of as much as $10 million.

PS I hope this is posted in the right place, I couldn't find it on (http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurants). The entire thing about what is a chain or not a chain is very confusing.

I used to occasionally eat at Brown's when I lived in the Chicago area (IIRC it was the first place I had lunch at after starting my first job in 1985); it might've been the only fast-food place that had deep-fried mushrooms on the menu.  Seems like it was a pretty popular chain back in the '70s and '80s and I believe there might've been a location or 2 in Rockford.

There is a lot more to the story including the stigma Brown's has carried ever since 7 people were murdered in a Brown's in Palatine in 1993. The phrase "Brown's Chicken Massacre" comes up frequently in Chicago area news, especially since the murderers came to trial this past year. That said, I had only had Brown's a few times, the deep fried mushrooms being the only thing I remember otherwise it never entered my radar.

I always liked Brown's Chicken when they had locations in the Kansas City area.  They pulled out in the 1980's.  The fried mushrooms were a bit hit in my family, and the chicken was pretty decent -  not overly breaded, but not having much herb-&-spice flavor like other fast-food chicken places.

I went to their location along IL 38 west of St. Charles, oops, Geneva (the highway cuts through a little part of St. Charles before hitting IL 47, plus the address was something like "1910 Lincoln Highway, St. Charles, IL  60174") in October 2006, and when I went to Brown's website at www.brownschicken.com it was not listed.  It was all right, not "out of this world".

That location in St Charles changed over to something called "Choo-Choo's" Chicken some time just recently in November when I noticed it driving by. Even though I live 5 miles away, I was only in that store once. I have frequented the Brown's on the west side of Aurora but not for the chicken, the building and ownership is shared with a Mexican restaurant called Tiajuana's. We'd go there for the Mexican but sometimes got the fried mushrooms from the Brown's side.

There was a Luby's Cafeteria in my home city where I used to live and everytime I saw the place I remember the massacre in Killean Texas in 1991. Some maniac killed 25 people and wounded 20. Someone escaped by throwing a table through the plate glass window.

We ate there a few times. Did not like the food.

There were a couple of locations in the West Palm Beach Fl. area during the 80s.  I noted the Lake Park Fl. location is now gone.
    Anybody remember them?

Back in the '80s I had lunch at a Luby's in San Antonio and I really enjoyed it; very good fried chicken and sides. The next ( and last ) time that I ate at a Luby's was about a dozen years ago at a long-defunct location in Nashville. Having sampled the food there, I sure can understand why the place didn't last very long. Once again, a restaurant chain's management felt the need to "fix" something that wasn't broken.

I was a daily regular at Luby's in Nashville (and Texas before that) and LOVED them.  That they left Tennessee is a culinary loss for the state.  Their salmon croquettes ROCK.
