Can anyone recommend a good lunch/dinner spot in Brunswick? Looking for great food at truly reasonable prices. Would love either BBQ or seafood, but will take anything. TIA!

This is my backyard. Hope this helps. Lunch: Willie's Weenie Wagon is truly what Raod food is all about. It is drive-up service heaven. The porkchop sandwhich is one of my favorites. Its on Altama Ave. near Costal Ga. Community College. I know everyone on Roadfood loves the Ga. Pig (as i do), but for my money, the best BBQ in Brunswick is Twin Oaks BBQ on Norwich street right off downtown. For the country style buffet, hands down, Nick's off Hwy 17 going north out of town. Items on the menu vary, but there is always fried chicken and always side items like your Grandma made. Can't miss it, Look for the Huge Cow on the road sign. Dinner: Best fried shrimp: Mudcat Charlies at two-way fish camp marina. Head north on Hwy 17 toward Darien and it will be on the right. About 15 mins form Brunswick. Great food, and if you can get over the fact it is served on papaer plates (some disposal and water issue) you will have a great meal with a veiw. Crab Trap and Crabdaddys (right next to each other). Have to send you to St. Simons Island for these, but well worth it. Just head over the causeway (only 5 miles) and stay straight until Ocean Blvd., take a right and they will bo on the left. These places will have the best and freshest seafood. Crab Trap is fried with hush puppies and large platters. Crabdaddys is grilled and blackened plates that is a bit less casual. If you are looking for a nice piece of fish, Crabdaddys. If you are looking for fried oysters and shrimp, Crab trap. They are both great seafood places with different personalities which you can tell just from their curbside appeal. Breakfast: Sabdcastle, on St. Simons in the Village/Pier area (on right). $7.95 all you can eat buffet includes drinks, with pancakes, waffels, and eggs made to order and a buffet line with grits (regular and cheese), eggs, biscuits & gravy, hashbrowns, cornbeef hash, bacon, sausage, b-fast casserole, and fruit (so they tell me). Need i say more? Good for lunch too. "Anything": Moondogies pizza on St. Simons. Little Siagon. Vietnamese off Altama Ave. Unreal and authentic. Oriental market inside. Call for directions or ask; can be hard to find. In an old shopping strip area. Brogens. On St. Simons in the village/pier area. Sit on the porch with a clod beer and get a cheese burger.

Coastal, Glad to hear someone mention Twin Oaks. Although I like GA pig, Twin Oaks seems to have a slight edge over them and Mack's in terms of moistness and depth of barbecue flavor. Can't wait to return to Brunswick... Jim

Soobee, Let me say this also, if you have some tinme to spend in Burnswick and Glynn County, my original recomendations are perfect. If you are just passing by on I95, you might just want to stick to the Ga. Pig. Unfortunately for travelers, the best eats around here are not by the Interstate.

Coastal, help me out here. On Hwy 84 out of Brunswick, there is a small grocery store (Jerry's, I think). They served a good BBQ sandwich that was both huge and cheap.

Also, next time you can get by with a cooler, they smoke whole butts overnight that you can buy. The most moist and tender in this area. They make a mean sauce also, its just not as vingar based as i like. NOTE: to all who are reading this, Gary Lee's is a must try. It is off the same exit as the Ga. Pig and instead of heading east to the Pig go West about 5 miles, its on your right. I feel i have slighted all of you for not mentioning it earlier.

I have to agree with the calls for the GA Pig as I used to work at Twin Oaks when I lived on the Island. Got sick of them rather quickly. And really, you just can't beat Willie's pork chop sandwich. However, my old boss Jim used to run a hot dog stand on the beach during the summers (mid nineties when they gave it a try) and we actually beat Willie in the HotDog contest. He's since changed his rules and Jim has moved on. And Brogen's, another dive... I used to work there when it was Mama's Pizza (Brogen's North) and wish Nelson would come back and set up shop.

The local folks might have to help me out here as my memory is fading. I was down for 2 weeks of undercover training at FLETC many moons ago and the instructors took us out to a place way back in the woods along a big creek or river that served fish, oysters and fried lobster. I can't remember the name or where it was but man did we put on the feedbag. Seems like it was about a 30 minute drive or so way back in the woods.

Just across the bridge from Brunswick is St. Simons Island. You need to go to Barbara Jeans for the best southern food around. The cornbread, pumpkin bread and fried chicken are awesome.

Just out of curiosity, how is the "smog" in that area due to the ongoing fire disaster in SE Georgia? We got hit pretty hard today, and that was in Thomasville, GA.

For what it's worth, there is also a Steak N Shake just down the road at the same exit as the Ga Pig. If you're on 95 and don't have time to seek out some of the local choices, SnS is pretty good for a burger and a hand-made milk shake. It's also open 24 hrs if you need late night sustenance. Stopped at the GA Pig over the weekend on our way home from vacation. I must say that I've eaten there probably half a dozen times in the past decade, and this time it was awful. The meat was tasteless and the sauce wasn't much better. Did I hit it on a bad day or has it been going downhill lately?

Several years ago I was visiting family in SW Florida and went hundreds of miles out of my way to see if it was as good as I remembered. Well, the meat was a really good roast pork, probably tenderloin, but with none of the deep dark smokey flavor I remember. Quite a disappointment.

Southern Soul on St Simons is now the best cue followed by Twin Oaks & Allens. I think the seafood shack that he was talking about was the Bucaneer Club, it is good but I prefer Speed's Kitchen. Nick & Gary Lee are brothers. Nick shut down the meat market to just do buffet, Gary still does both. At Willies I prefer a Willie Burger to the Pork Chop Sandwich. Jones Kitchen in Jesup is worth the trip for a huge country lunch.

I am from Brunswick and a huge road-foodie. The Georgia Pig is one of the worst BBQ restaurants in the area. In terms of atmosphere and t-shirt, the Georgia Pig is awesome. But in terms of BBQ, the places stinks. I have been there five to ten times, and have never had a decent BBQ sandwich. A few years ago, I would have recommended Mac's in Brunswick. But after Mac died and they have gone through several different managers, the BBQ has never been the same. Mac's BBQ is "okay," at best. I would recommend Twin Oaks in Brunswick or Southern Soul on St. Simons Island. Other good eats in Brunswick / St. Simons Island / Jekyll Island: First, there are no casual and good restaurants on Jekyll. In Brunswick, the pork chop sandwich at Willie's Wee-Nee Wagon is a must. Tuptime Thai in Brunswick is phenomenal. http://www.tuptim.net/ Try the drunken noodle. Pho-1 in Brunswick,a Vietnamese place, is really good. For seafood, the Friday night buffet at B & J's in Darien cannot be beat. I hate buffets, but this food is so darn good, I'll go back five times. Expect a 20 minute wait for this hole in the wall. On St. Simons, try Crabdaddies; really fresh seafood and the bread pudding is out of this world. People love the crab cakes and she crab soup at Barbra Jean's. I love the pumpkin bread.

Brogen's is my favorite inexpensive restaurant in the area. I really love that "Kokomo" burger with ham and BBQ sauce. It gets pretty loud and obnoxious in the later evening, however. As far as nicer places go, Bennie's Red Barn is really good. We had the rehearsal dinner for my wedding party at J. Mac's Island Restaurant and it was fantastic. These are all on St. Simons Island, by the way. --Grant

As a long time resident of Brunswick, I have to say that for the best steak or pork chop sandwich in town, it's WILLIE'S WEENIE WAGON! I mean, they are JAM UP! They also have great cheeseburgers and slaw/chili dogs. They are very reasonably priced, and the employees are always cheerful & friendly. Oh, and for an added perk, you get a free iced tea with every meal! Willie's is located near the end of Altama Avenue, across from the Brunswick college. (Just look for the big hot dog sign that says "We Relish Your Buns!")
