Bub's in Sunderland ! ! !

I know I've seen conflicting reports about Bub's in Sunderland, Massachusetts. Soooo ... I was the first in the door today (a Sunday) and although the place feels as authentic as can be as you enter and was given a friendly greeting, I had low expectations. And I was ... ... pleasantly surprised. I ordered the pork ribs and pulled pork combo. My heart fell when I saw them take the rack out of the fridge and BOIL it and then finished it off on the gas grill. They pulled the pork out of some cauldron where I assume it was stewing in the sauce. While they were getting it together I explored the sides bar and everything was fresh and as I went to my table and waited for the meat, sampled the sides and they were all pretty good. Huhhhm. The meat came and I think I actually wanted to not like it ... but the ribs were hot, had a nice smoky flavor and took just the right amount of tugging to get the meat to come clean off the bones and the pulled pork was moist and nicely sauced. It was a bit pricey. But not outrageous. And ... I'd go back -- perhaps to experience the place at its worst. But today was a good experience. Meanwhile, I'm spending a lot of time in this neck of the woods and am able to stray past my "must hits" and am finding more good spots in 'hamp ... The Haymarket and India House for example. The place where Grampy bartends The Blue Heron back up in Sunderland is spectacular white tablecloth food with a nice bar atmosphere too.

When we were starving college kids, Bub's was the best. Last time I went back, about 10 years ago, it was just fine, nothing great, but fine for New England. But there's one thing you can't deny about Bub's: it's the best barbecue place in Slumberland!

I like Bub's, though I'd never claim it was world-class or anything. But then I'm from Minnesota originally, and don't really know barbecue (but I know what I like!) If you're willing to head a bit further north, The Smokin' Hippo (http://www.thesmokinhippo.com/) on Rt. 2 in Erving is pretty good. More of a Texas style-- they claim smoked brisket as their house specialty. Dan B, Pioneer Valley foodie

I'd have to agree with Asphalt here...I too was a starving college student in the area at one point and we loved Bub's!
