Bummed out again...

We had a couple of nice looking strips tonite. Once again my wife picked up the select cuts an sale at Kroger.$3.99/lb and a nice strip of fat accross the top. I opted to fry them in our cast iron skillet becaause in the broiler they are well done before they brown. 3/4" steak and 2 min a side on high heat. It should have been a perfect MR but as usual lookd grey all the way through. Almost no juice and so little flavor! It was tender enough just so boring! I dont know whats happened to meat in the last few years. Even choice seem to lack the pleasure they once held!

Sounds like some of the guys from Minny-sota --frozen, thawed, frozen, thawed, etc. No wonder they sell a lot of brandy up there.

Wow-we never see meat prices that inexpensive at our local chain. But I have a wonderful butcher 3/4 of a mile from my home, and he has the best meat around.I may pay a higher price for steaks, but its worth it. I really think it depends on the supplier.Kroger has its own warehouse, so who knows, as mentioned above, if it was handled properly....

Kroger runs select strips and rib eyes from 3.99.4.99 fairly often. Its always the same poor commercial quality meat. Almost like cow rather than beef. They come in whoe because they also offer the whole loin or rib for around a buck a lb less. Thats untrimmed and still in cryo.

I see your in Fairborn, Ohio... Have you been to Landes Meat Market over in Clayton?? I go there fairly often, love their meats, fresh eggs and bakery items. I think they are Amish but not 100% certain. They raise all their own meat and slaughter/dress the meat. When I was there this past weekend, I saw one of the butchers bring out a pig for someone to take home to ( I guess a pig roast). My son was kinda stunned, he never saw a whole pig dressed before lol I got several steaks for the grill and they were awesome as usual. Pamela

I have drive by Landes many times. I thought they were a poultry farm. The closet butcher id Copley's in Medway. Decent meats but about 40% more than Angus at my local Fulmers. The only time we get beef or pork at kroger is wen my wife goes alone. To me the pork as well as beef is flat, chewey and tasteless. Fulmer had only choice meats and we have gotten decent rib eyes and strips. They have a sale about 2X/mo with strips or rib eyes at4.99-5.99/lb

Well there is an off shoot of the family so to speak that does have a turkey farm, I have bought turkeys there before. Actually they also sell the same turkeys at Dorothy Lane Market ( at Thanksgiving ) which I didn't know till recently. Pam
