Hello all, New here, a few posts a reading more all the time. thx Heres my ?. Its a good one. I'm 4wks away with my cart setup in Key West. I'm having trouble finding a poppy seed bun supplier to deliver down here. Even GFS (food supplier) cant get them for me. Has anyone tried or know how one can take a hot dog bun and add poppy seeds manually? They will need to stick good like a commercial bun. Any other ideas will be appreciated. thx joeydog

Find a local bakery in your neighborhood, give them the specs of what you want.. Shouldn't be a problem, not to mention they'll be fresher then going thru a distributor.

As bad as this might sound, you might have to make your Chicago with a plain bun. Since Key West is sooooo far from the main land, you can't just go to Sam's or Costco.

They're nothing more then normal hot dog buns with Poppy Seeds sprinkled on top before baking. Alot of grocery stores nowdays have their own in house bakery, try them out also..

Hi gang, Today was a positive day. My local Publix said they could easily make them for me. Higher cost though. 3.47 for 8ct My food supplier is trying to secure some for me. Things are just a tad harder way down here, it will be worth it. My thoughts are, if I cant get a good pricing on poppy seed hotdog buns I will still build a authentic chicago dog but on a non-poppy seed bun. The buns I can get are great, so I believe the public may oversee the bun fact. Input Plz? thx gang Joeydog

Joeydog, at that price, I'd bake my own for far less... Did you let them know this would be for wholesale vendor purchase?? On a daily basis?? Look over ChicagoStyleDogs recommendations above..

Restaurant and bakery supplies have a spray to help apply toppings to bread. You may be able to get regular buns and apply poppy seeds. RJF

Chicagostyledog, I'm not sure if I mentioned I went to SIUC, Carbondale, though it seems strange that you wrote that. I have years of experience and now my wife and I are fighting with the VA and Social Security for disability. We are both in wheelchairs after my wife caught something in the Navy and then I got it. Our wonderful country booted her out with no benefits, so now we are both struggling trying to prove disability with an unknown disease. We hit the Chicago Suntimes Sunday front page 6 months ago. The newspaper reporter said no one responded and they forwarded no mail, so we don't know if people responded and the newspaper tossed the mail. I love gourmet cooking and pulled time cooking on a aircraft carrier. Though there is little room for anyone to work in a commercial kitchen or run a hotdog stand in a manual wheel chair. (I was born in Elmhurst IL which is a suburb of Chicago and grew up eating the "Chicago Dog", (gota have the sport peppers with them, though now a days its eating my stomach). :) RJF

Now this pisses me off. Besides Richard's post, the Charlotte paper had an article about how difficult it is for disabled people to get social security benefits. They get a 10-15 minute "exam" by a 70-something retired M.D. who gets praised for keeping the approval rate down. Funny that we have billions of dollars for a lie-started war and can sacrifice our young people's lives, have plenty of money for politician's junkets and pet "bridges to nowhere" but can't take care of our own or our kid's schools. We have a lottery here that supposedly is to go to the schools, yet at the beginning of the year, teachers at our local school were asking parents for pencils, construction paper, paste and other basics. WTF?

Well to be totally off the topic of food, what is even funnier, before my wife went into the military she was a fully certified teacher, (gifted, regular ed, special ed) K-12. She struggled 70 hours a week to keep up and being underpaid at that. She decided to join the military and now that she is tossed out, she can't work as a teacher, (and they say there is a teaching shortage). Called strategic spending in government, the real costs like what happens to souls like us are kept out and the government marches on advertising the virtues of the military. There are no national campaigns for folks like us, anyone know of a country taking decent people? :) Thanks for the little anger note, at least I know there is one person that knows. Cordially RJF

Good luck Richard, some vets are still trying to get benefits for illnesses caused by agent orange. SS is no easier to battle for disability payments, I went through that and the doctors they use should be swimming in ponds they're such quacks!

Little update, I had a neurologist diagnosis me with Periphial Neuropathy. After looking at the etiology he thinks its from toxins and said I should take myself and my family to a toxicologist. (In other words the Navy poisoned us!). I'm wondering how many vets are out there that have mysterious conditions and maybe in the same spot without knowing it! This has been a 3 year ride so far. Thanks Jim, We have been with the DAV in Chicago for 3 years. I don't know if the holdup is with the DAV in Chicago or the VA in Chicago, though we have been bounce around by Social Security Docs and VA Docs for 3 years and still have no formal decisions. We have allot of MDs that just shrug their shoulders and then ask us whats wrong. My wife always says after the appointment that she want so tell the MD "Hell you went to medical school, aren't you suppose to know whats wrong with us?", though this would always come off as being a wise-ass. We go the the MDs and then they expect us to tell them what is wrong. Without the MDs finding out and writing it down, we are getting a royal run around. Thanks again Jim, RJF

I have finally been recognized as disabled by Social Security. I filed in March of 2004 and they sent a letter stating that they would recognize me as disabled as of July of 2007. If I don't like the disability date I have to appeal before a judge and this may take up to a year before I am seen. I have a friend in Maryland that filed and was found disabled in 3 months. She told me that Social Security is suppose to pay back to the application date. If that is true, it seems the government is ignoring their own rules and making sure to make it as difficult as possible to get disability pay. My wife and I have struggled since 2004 scraping along on welfare and the bills slowly pile up. I thought when I was recognized as disable, I would at least get a bit of back pay to pay bills. Is this how the system works? And even now we are still waiting for VA to make a decision on our disability. Its one thing to have one member of the household disabled, though this is getting impossible when both my wife and I are disabled from the military and the government has nothing but excuses about the backlogs and continuing appeal process. (My wife is still in the appeal process for Social Security and both of us are "in process with VA since 2004). Lord if people truly knew how the government treats disabled vets, they would never send their children into the military. RJF
