I miss Burger Chef, are there any in USA? They moved out of Michigan years ago.

Unfortunately, there are no Burger Chef's left. The chain was bought out by Hardees in the 80s. The last Burger Chef closed around 1997 in Tennessee...

The first one I remember was in the 60's in West TN. I really liked the Big Chef with the special sauce. It seemed a lot better than the other chains at the time.

Was that the chain that was called Mr. 15 back in the middle 60's but had to change its name due to inflation?

There used to be two of them around here. The closest one is a pizza store and the other is a daycare after Hardees moved to another location.

I believe all the Pleaser's restaurants have closed. The one on Cookeville TN closed a couple of years ago. BTW, last I knew company founders Donald and Frank Thomas are both still alive.

What did you find special about Burger Chef? I remember a Burger Chef in Sault Ste Marie, MI in the '70s, but at the time I didn't think the food was particularly good. The main thing they had going for them, was a lack of fast food competition. For example: the nearest McDonalds in Michigan was over 100 miles away (and was a very popular stop for LSSC students returning to southern Michigan). Keith

I worked at a Burger Chef in Indianapolis, which was the international headquarters for the chain. They made a good burger, but I hated having to take those conveyor chains out of the machine each night and rolling them up to run them through the dishwasher. We had two sets, and the one coming out of the washer was put on the shelf, while the rested one was put in the machine. There were two chains, one for the meat patties, and one for the bun pieces. The bun pieces arrived at the other end with enough time to prepare the set-up, so the meat patties could go right on, and then get wrapped.

Actually folks, there is one last chance to have a Burger Chef! Kinda... An old Burger Chef still stands just north of Chattanooga, Tn., in the small, off the interstate city of Cleveland. Check out this wonderful photo trip, then & now: http://www.freewebs.com/burgerchef/thechefcleavelandtn06.htm Is that cool or what! I plan to hit this place, the next trip to Choo-Choo city. A few pictures are a must.`

I'd like to see their menu and how true it is to the original Burger Chef menu. I've always wanted to try the Big Shef. I have been wanting to go to Chatanooga to pick up some Double Cola sometime when I have the time/money. I may have to check this place out.

Sadly, finding Double Cola in Chattanooga is all but over!!! I used to buy them by the case, in glass bottles, right off the dock. Their headquarters was near Lookout Mountain, and was open to loyal customers like me. Today, that old redbrick building houses something else, and I can't find any Double Cola at any of the places I used to. If you do a Google, you will find a website, where you can buy it in cans only. I recall one of the last times I found it in Chattanooga, and that was close to 7 0r 8 years ago, the small grocery store owner, told me that Coca-Cola was muscling Double Cola off shelves, with an "Us or Them" threat. Screw Coke...

I though if I could find it anywhere, it would be in Chatanooga. Guess I'll hit up the website.

They are still using the flame broiler with the added condiment dispenser.

There was a hamburger chain that did have such a character and is still in business. Did this character hold a spoon in one hand? I think it's called Happy Chef.

Charlotte has one of the old places also. Now known as Zack's, it is near the corner of Sedgefield and South Blvd. Great burgers and "to die for" onion rings
