Anyone here been to this one? Sounds like a good one (and not a Whopper in 20 miles): http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/8105 This site has two more entries for Matoon, for a custard stand shaped like a cone, and the Worlds Largest Bagel parade (late July)...sounds like a food destination to me!

I'm afraid that the Burger King in Mattoon is nothing to get excited about. In fact, just the opposite; I ate there about ten years ago ( burger and fries ), and was very disappointed in their food. Just one man's opinion, of course, but I would never go back.

So you went there ten years ago once and was disappointed and haven't returned. I guess that warrants a comment here. A few years ago, I worked on a project that brought me by that Burger King 3-4 times a day. We stopped there for lunch about once or twice a week. Was it the best burger or fries I've ever had? No, but I didn't expect them to be. Their food reminded me of the Burger-Shake in Lexington, KY. For the price, it was quite satisfactory. It's been about three years since I last stopped there, but if I found myself in the area again, I wouldn't hesitate to stop and eat.

jman, I'm glad that you enjoyed your meals there, but I didn't enjoy mine... not at all. I thought that their burger and fries both were rather inferior. If I pass through Mattoon again, I really can't see myself giving them another try. I travel on a very tight budget and can't justify spending money on a meal that past experience tells me that I probably won't enjoy.

Didn't the "Mad Gasser" put Mattoon on the map? Not too many places can claim a mass hysteria event that had an alledged transvestite chemistry major blamed for terrorizing a community just because he was "odd" and lived with his sisters.

I do have to agree with nocarolina-I ate at a place that is quite well known, and I found the food sub par.The thought of eating there now is without a doubt, out of the question.

Thanks for the input, all - my brother & his family are driving down from NW Illinois to visit later this month and I was looking for good stops. He and I would both be glad to stop there and shout "In your face, multi-national fast-food corporation!" but wouldn't go out of our way to do it. He is taking my cues to stop at Funks Grove and the Ariston Cafe in Litchfield, though.
