Burger War Mon, 07/6/09 8:49 AM (permalink)
OAK BROOK, Ill. (July  2, 2009) McDonald's long-awaited rollout of the Angus Third Pounder places the quick-service giant squarely on the front line of what is rapidly heating up into a premium burger war.

McDonald's new line of hamburgers, which are made with a third-pound of Angus beef, marks the chain's first new burger rollout since 2001. The new burgers, which have been in test in several markets for two years, are expected to compete with the Original Six Dollar Burger offered by CKE Restaurants' Carl's Jr. and Hardee's chains, and Burger King's Steakhouse XT Burger well as larger burger selections featured by chains like In-N-Out Burger, Fatburger, Smashburger, The Counter and Five Guys.

The move to offer premium burgers also seems to be cutting across foodservice segments. While quick-service and fast-casual competitors are offering larger, higher-end choices, fine-dining operators like Bobby Flay, Marcus Samuelsson, Laurent Tourondel, Hubert Keller and Danny Meyer also are getting into the action by opening burger-centric concepts around the country.

Flay, who launched his Bobby's Burger Palace chain a year ago, already has four outlets operating in the Northeast.
Danya Proud, a McDonald's spokeswoman, said the Angus burgers will be available in three variations: the Deluxe, with American cheese, lettuce and tomatoes; Bacon & Cheddar; and Mushroom & Swiss. She said the burgers would be priced at $3.99, "give or take, depending on the location."

The Angus burger, which has been in test for a couple of years, will be available at all U.S. outlets for the next several months, Proud said. McDonald's has about 14,000 U.S. units

"It was not introduced as a core menu item, but we will be evaluating it. It will continue to have a role on the menu," she said.

And while Proud acknowledged that McDonald's officials had been following the competition's shift toward offering larger burgers, she said, "The company's focus is on our customers and our business.

"Over time we've seen that Angus beef has generated more widespread appeal," she continued. "To get an Angus third-pound burger at less than $4 is a tremendous value. [In addition to the premium beef] we are using very high-end ingredients, like thinly sliced Swiss cheese and an artisan-style roll."

Proud also rebuffed reports that the rollout had sparked widespread pushback from franchisees who were concerned that launching a higher priced premium hamburger product during the recession would be a mistake -- particularly while the chain rolls out its McCafe line of premium coffees.

"The franchisees told us they couldn't get it in their restaurants quickly enough," she said. "I think people misconstrued things. During the early stages of the test we were using a slightly bigger burger that would have required new equipment. But we went to slightly smaller burgers that can be prepared on existing grills."

Irwin Kruger, whose company, ISK Manhattan Inc., franchises four McDonald's outlets in Manhattan -- including the sprawling 17,500-square-foot McDonald's in Times Square -- has been testing the Angus burger for two years, and says it has been a "big hit" with customers.

"Initially, because of the larger size of the patty, it required some grill modifications," he said. "But that was resolved with the change in size."

The Angus burger test in New York was supported with a local marketing promotion that included billboards, he said.
"It has been very well received," Kruger said. "Customers that have larger appetites and are looking for a premium burger love it. It's a natural fit for our menu."

McDonald's Corp. operates about 31,000 units around the globe.

Not for nothing, but all the McDs around me have had those burgers on their menus for more than 2 years.  I guess they roll em out by region?  They aren't even that good to begin with, so the other restaurants shouldn't really worry about McD cutting into their business, just each other.

Higher price?  If significant, no way this works.  McD isn't even focasing their advertising to higher end.....makes no sense to me.

McD is losing ground NOT because of their product.  Its the same.  Small, warmed over, cheap and consistant.  They are losing their stuff because their HELP, compared to years ago, is atrocious......but thats a common malady.

But, you go to MCD for cheap food and quick and courteous service....tell me, which of those doesn't fit?

I tried one last week.  It was really good.  Not on the same level of other restaurants, but it didn't have the typical McD, BK, Wendy's, fast food taste to it.

Doc, in all that spiel by McDonalds, they never mentioned anything like them tasting fantastic.
Sounds like the bean counters are running this promotion.

Good luck to them competing with In-N-Out Burger.....they're going to need it!

I would fly to California just to eat an In-N-Out, they are THAT good!

Oh I agree and check this out

There are 3 sentences in this story that are very important:

1 after franchisees reportedly rejected proposals

2 $1 double cheeseburger would hurt margins and potentially lead customers to trade down from higher-priced products.

3 "We are concerned that the lack of alignment between Burger King and its franchisees could complicate efforts to turn sales," Buckley said.

BK to sell $1 double cheeseburger with coupon
                By Ron Ruggless

MIAMI (July 14, 2009) Burger King Corp. said Tuesday it would distribute coupons for a $1 double cheeseburger after franchisees reportedly rejected proposals to feature the sandwich at that price on their menus.

The franchisor also said it would focus marketing efforts on its $1 Whopper Jr. sandwich in August and September. During that time, the chain said it would distribute direct-mail coupon books, which include the $1 double cheeseburger offer, to 80 million U.S. households.

“Burger King Corp. remains fully focused on its value offerings and delivering value for the money to its guests,” the company said in a statement.

Burger King franchisees last week rejected a plan by the franchisor to sell the double cheeseburger for $1 for four months and a later proposal for a six-week promotion, according to Dow Jones reports. The reports cited franchisees who voiced concerns that a $1 double cheeseburger would hurt margins and potentially lead customers to trade down from higher-priced products.

Rival McDonald's raised the price of its double cheeseburger from $1 to $1.19 late last year amid rising costs and franchisee complaints that a profit could not be made on the item. The double cheeseburger was replaced on the Dollar Menu with a McDouble sandwich, which contains two patties but only one slice of cheese.

Joe Buckley, an analyst with Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, said in a report Tuesday that franchisee tension, stemming from an ongoing soft drink contract dispute, could be a road block for Burger King as it seeks to add value offerings to drive traffic.

"We are concerned that the lack of alignment between Burger King and its franchisees could complicate efforts to turn sales," Buckley said.

Somebody has to help me out here with terms of the Burger King franchise agreement. Does Burger King redeem the coupons for their franchisees, or do the franchisees fund the discount to the customers for these promotions?

Tom Carvel used to print discount coupons for ice cream that his Carvel Ice Cream franchisees used to refuse to honor for ice cream and related products. Lots of angry customers.

If Burger King does not reimburse franchisees for these discounts, I see no  problem with franchisees printing up sheets to give to customers that give the names, office telephone numbers, and email addresses of the BK execs who approved this policy.

I tried a Krystal Angus burger.  It was terrible.   You actually tasted the meat..Ugh!  I'd much prefer White Castle, but here in Florida we have Krystal.  This is the only fast food burger I eat..Sliders from Krystal.

I like them because you can't taste too much of the meat..It's just a combo of tastes and textures that I can live with.  But their attempt to move into another burger segment (Angus burgers) falls woefully short for me.

I also think Krystal's fries are as good as those of McDonald's that I recall.  I think they try extremely hard to please their customers, too.

I don't go to McDondald's - $3.99 for a burger at McDonald's...G-D bless them if they can get.  Their stock has done great.

"Someone should sue!"  Really?  Why not take this unique approach....Do not frequent a place you think is adverse to your health.  It's really quite easy to accomplish.

It's interesting to see the responses to McDonald's foray into the
Angus burger competition.  I cannot  remember the last time I went into a Mcdonald's.  I have generally found that IF I do get
a "fast food" meal, I usually opt for a Wendy's.   Their Big Classic
Burger and dthe chicken sandwiches are the one's I usually get.

That being said, being form CT I am partial to a "local" place,
usually for a grinder.  At least that's what I grew up on.  Once
I started traveling throughout the country, I then found out about
all the great regional specialties, in particular the great cheese-
                          steaks in the Philadelphia area.

I have found great hamburger/hot dog stands all throughout the Northeast.  Almost all of them I stopped at again.
