Buttered NE Style roll ala Clam Box photo

Forget the lobster featured in today's photo from the Clam Box. I want to know how to prepare that top loading toasted buttered roll.

I just picked up some of these rolls at Wegmans (12/$2.29) to use with hot dogs. They are nice and fresh, but I'd love to enjoy them as in this photo. So how is it done, or how would you do it? Thanks.

It's as easy as grilling the roll (both sides) in butter in a skillet. Nothing better for lobster ... or for a non-Kosher hot dog.

Put your cast-iron skillet or grill on low to medium-low heat until it's about at the temperature you would use if you were making pancakes. You don't want it too hot, because the sides would burn before the center of the roll was warm. While it's heating, butter the split sides of the rolls lavishly. Lay the buns on the cast iron and keep an eye on them. You're looking at about 90 seconds to two minutes per side, starting to peek about a minute or so.

Ideally, you want the dogs ready to go when you're doing this. You should always do the buns last, so they're still nice and warm while you're eating them.

Thanks guys, I guess deep down I was wondering if there was some kind of contraption used in NE to do both sides at once.

Nope. Regular old grills and lots of butter.

White Hut uses a two sided grill (always lined with foil) ... but they do a lot of buns. For the rest of us, the extra two minutes to flip is not that bad of a time investment.

The Wegman brand rolls are my favorite.

For hotdogs, I usually just grill the buns with no butter, and only butter the sides when doing lobster or crab rolls. But, whatever you like, go for it.

$64,000 dollar question, where in the San Jose Bay area (formerly San Francisco Bay) can this roadfooder buy these wonderful buns?? .................. I see them offered on line but by the time I'd receive them they'd be stale...............

PS. Mike, get the "E-mail notification back on line"

I was just telling someone how much I miss White Hut the other day. I'll be back in Westfield at the end of August and that'll be one of my first stops!

fpczyp - That is probably the best picture of a sandwhich I have ever seen. I have never had a lobster roll but I can taste it now. Thanks.
