Buy Generic Zyrtec(R) Cheap - 14 for $1.00

You probably thought this was by a spammer looking to sell worthless drugs. No, its a story about an anomoly in the world of fixed price retailing, private label goods, bulk drug manufacturing, and dumping. I'd been taking ChlorTrimeton for 40 years during the allergy season, but time marches on. Ever since the insurance companies got the second generation antihistamines made OTC (over the counter) so they wouldn't have to pay for them, I've been looking to a good one at a fair price. Cetirizine Hydrochloride, 10 mg works best for me by actual test (read: experimenting with drugs). The patent for Zyrtec  expired in 2007, but they are still pricy at retail. Walgreen wants $14.99 for 14 Zyrtec, and $10.99 for their generic knockoff. At Dollar Tree, that great chain store emporium of Chinese-made goods, hopelessly watered down cleaning products, and shrinking candy bars, I came across a box of 14 Cetirizine Hydrochloride, 10 mg. tablets. The distributor was listed as Greenbrier International, which is an A/K/A for Dollar Tree. I took one, and found they worked (for me at least) as well as Zyrtec.

Having had nothing better to do on a Sunday, I went to see if I could find out where they were made. With some chain drug stores now selling Indian-made Cetirizine Hydrochloride at high prices, I began to suspect China. After a lot of sleuthing, I am 99% percent certain the drug itself is manufactured in New York State. The manufacturer has an ANDA to manufacture it. It is nicely packaged, with child-resistant blister packaging.

While it is Dollar Tree's 'Assured' house brand, I don't want to publish any more that that, for I think they are giving it away at that price, and don't want to jeopardize the supply. I found one other distributor that is distributing it as a generic, and suspect there are a few more. They are selling it for more than $1 a box. The mnufacturer and/or packager may be selling to Dollar Tree near or at cost (dumping) to generate enough volume to run off a batch for the other distributors as well.

While places like Dollar Tree sell cheap goods at low prices, every so often you find a true bargain there.

The bigger quantity you buy, the cheaper they get. If you've got serious allergies, it pretty much never is worth buying a bottle of 14 anything.  I get the Walgreen's brand Zyrtec, 300 for $42.99 (works out to 14 cents a pill). As to where they're made, it depends on where you are. I live less than 50 miles from Perrigo, so a lot of the store brands around here come from there.

I'm intrigued by getting things at Dollar Tree, though. It never occurred to me to buy things there that actually matter (the fact that they sell pregnancy tests has always kind of disturbed me...there are some things for which I would be willing to spend a few more dollars), but I have gotten stuff like ibuprofen there before. I'll have to keep an eye out next time I'm in!

But felix.....isn't David_NYC's deal is 7 cents a pill, half the bulk price at Walgreen's?

If you bought 43 dollars worth of the deal at Dollar Tree, you'd end up with 602 pills instead of the 300 at Walgreen's

Around here, Dollar Tree has far better values than Dollar General or Family Dollar.  DG and FD both like to advertise as if they are giving you a bargain, but in reality, they usually are higher priced than Wal-Mart and a lot of other stores.  As long as you know your local current prices, you can get some good bargains at Dollar Tree, even sometimes in name-brand food items.

TJ...absolutely! I was just saying you can get the Walgreen's brand cheaper if you buy more pills, not that I get them cheaper than anywhere else. Thus why I was excited about the Dollar Tree option.

If you're already a member, Sam's Club has their generic at $17.50 for 350 tablets... probably not work buying a membership for just the pills.  :)

Is it still worth it after you pay the membership cost?
