Buyouts! Tue, 09/20/05 8:15 PM (permalink)
I think it is true when the big major companys buyout smaller ones they buy for the name only then skimp on the ingredients. There is a soda down south called Cheerwine and its made with real sugar instead of fructose corn syrup. And it is excellent. Drink a Cheerwine no aftertaste then drink a Pepsi or Coke and they will leave an aftertaste in your mouth. Not Cheerwine. I heard that in Mexico they still make Coke with real sugar. People in the US were trying to bring it into the States and sell it and Coke wanted to stop it.

If your town has a fairly decent sized mexican/latino population, and grocery stores/bodegas geared towards them, try them- the often have the 'real' Coke/Pepsi in their coolers..in REAL glass bottles....

Bellz66, if your city has a good sized Jamaican population, see if the grocery store carries sugar-free Bigga http://www.bigga.com/frt_page.php
It's got some really great fruit flavors. In my hometown of Milwaukee you can get Coke made with cane sugar and my wife tells it's no comparison to the stuff made with corn syrup. Likewise when we vacation in Jamaica, the Pepsi there is much better I'm told by my friends.

Since we have been writing about the sugar - HFCC issue, in several threads, I have made it a point to stop at several little ethnic markets. The owners must think that I am nuts. I read the bottles of Coke and Pepsi, find HFCC, put it back and leave. One of these days I will find a store with the imported, all sugar, product. I will then become a soft drink drinker again. (but never again will I get into the 4 or 5 bottle a day habit)

Cheerwine is great. Unfortunatly, I can only have so much sugar, so I used to drink a lot of the diet Cheerwine, which tastes almost the same as the regular Cheerwine.

BTW, Cheerwine is a "North Carolina" product. It can be found in some other southern states as well as PA, Minn, and a couple of other localized areas, but mostly, it's a N.C. thing. It was created in Salibury, NC; a small civil war era town located about halfway between Greensboro and Charlotte along I-85. It's a sleepy town, whose past helps to keep day tourists visiting. It also helps that the I-85 corridor between Greensboro and Charlotte is NASCAR central, with The Rock, just a short distance away.
A short jaunt in the other direction, takes you to Lexington, NC, which is commonly known as the BBQ capital of NC.

Cheerwine also makes Cool Moon, which is a citrus soda. And sell a pretty darn good purified water called Blue Mist. Which I haven't had since moving away from G'boro.

At Greensboro Bats (A baseball) games, I would start with a diet cheerwine, then have some Red Oak beers.

There are several "gourmet" soda brands that use real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. And boy, they taste A LOT better and are less acidic. For Example, I'm not a fan of regular Dr. Pepper, but I love "Dublin Dr. Pepper." You can check them out here:

The store brand soda at Whole Foods uses 'real' sugar. The cola tastes a lot like Coke with cane sugar.
