My favorite for Italian Beef is Portillo's with outlets all around Chicago. First ate at the very first Portillo's in Villa Park in the late 1960's and have been loyal to them ever since. http://www.portillos.com/

Tony, will you be limited to a particular area of the city or suburbs? Or will you be free to move about pretty much as you please? Brad

You realize that if you ask 10 people, you may get ten different answers. I like Burt's and Lou Malnati's for deep dish pizza; Chickie's (sp?) for Italian Beef. I won't go to Chicago without a visit to Freddie's.

Downtown I do pizza @ Gino's East, 162 E Superior St; Gino's and Malnati's are my two favorite Chicago pizza but if I'm downtown I do Gino's for the added atmospheric value. Burt's is in the NW burbs but is an experience all it's own and would be my first choice but it will take time to get to and from there. From downtown take the Milwaukee District west line and get off at the Morton Grove stop. Burt's is only a 5 min walk at best. MilwFoodLover nailed the two best Italians in town. Chickie's on S. Pulaski and Freddie's on 31'st east of Halsted. And Glenn's Diner in Ravenswood is the best dining experience in the city and the best seafood inland in the midwest. Take the EL-Brown line.

I was just in Chicago January 15-16. Went to the Berghoff for lunch. I haven't been there since it re-opened. The cafe (downstairs) isn't open on Saturdays, so we ate in the main dining room. The food is still excellent, especially the soups and the breads. I didn't have pizza this trip (the only time we could go was after the opera on Saturday night). Gino's East was close to our hotel, and we would have gone there, but the line was just too intimidating. I also love Lou Malnati's.

Thanks for the reply. I am free to move about. ScreamingChicken Tony, will you be limited to a particular area of the city or suburbs? Or will you be free to move about pretty much as you please? Brad
