COLLEGE FOOTBALL 2013 - 2014

THERE'S NOTHING LIKE COLLEGE FOOTBALL!
I haven't seen the Vegas odds on the Tide three-peating, but I wouldn't be surprised.
The team I'd love see rise from the ashes is Penn State. Not enough Horse power there to win the Championship but I hope they have a good season!

I still consider the USC/UCLA games to be the major rivalry games of the football and (almost) Basketball seasons. That has faded a lot of the years, especially for me here in the LOUISVILLE vs KENTUCKY area.

I heard on the radio this morning that The Princeton Review (I think that was the name) named Iowa the #1 party school in the nation, so you should be OK for tailgating.

Perhaps, their new ten million dollar scoreboard will help!

Ohio State is ranked No. 2 in the pre-season Coaches Poll, but I'm still rooting for Yale and Navy. Oh, wait. It's Navy (womens) lacrosse, not football.

Heh.  Tailgaiting in Iowa City is a highly refined art form.  The Monday newspaper "police beat" is always an interesting read!

Penn State had a good season last year, despite the sanctions. I'd like to see them have at least one more win/one less loss. Each year of improvement will help when they're back bowl eligible.

As a Syracuse NY native, I'm interested to see how SU does under a new coach, a reviving program and in a new conference (ACC). Their schedule is favorable for a bowl visit.

The big ACC buzz is the schedule - some teams have it harder (Miami) than others. But, in the end, that only helps for ACC championship standings.  The polls will determine things after the top two ACC bowl tie-ins. - so it only matters if one is in position to win or pose a threat to win a division (atlantic or Coastal). The polls take over after theACC championship winner is selected to the BCS.

Syracuse isn't in the mix, IMO, so as long as they can eke out 6 or 7 wins, which their home and away schedule seems to indiciate they could do it, they go bowling their first year inthe ACC. That would be a tremebdous boost to the longevity of the program being successful in the ACC. Traditionally, like other former Big East teams (VaTech, Miami) they should be contenders for division championships every year, once they can get over the first hurdle. But if it takes too long to make a splash in the new conference, they'll be the next NC State - a program with a decent history, but not a year-in-year out contender.

My Alma Mater... Well lets just say they would lose to a school for the deaf and blind.

I just like college football, doesnt really matter which teams are playing, I just like watching the game, seeing the WILD BLUE turf, and just waiting for the air to turn crisp and cool.

One year I was on campus the day of the USC/UCLA game. Tailgate parties, alumni BBQ's and more were going on all over the campus. I could barely walk out of the lab without tripping over people on the grass having pre-game celebrations. A wild day!

My daughter is a USC Alum. She went there on a Swimming Scholarship.
I had to make a deal with the school.
They said, "We'll give her a full ride if you'll buy a Tee Shirt and a Cap."
I thought long and hard about that one!
She went there during the Larry Smith era. A sad time in USC Football History.

After a disappointing 7-win season last year (snapping an 8-year streak of 10+ victory seasons) my Virginia Tech Hokies will be starting off this year on August 31 against perennial patsy Alabama.  Oy.

They've always been a little confused about identity down there in the middle of nowhere.  The Gobbler died when they dropped VPI (Virginia Polytechnic Institute) for VPI-SU (State University), eventually settling on "Virginia Tech".

At one point they wanted to re-name that barnyard The University of Virginia at Blacksburg! That met with a little resistance from Mr. Jefferson's "Academical Village".

My graduate alma mater, U.Va., always cites our admissions standards as an excuse for not being a consistent winner.  Yet, somehow, that has not inhibited the Leland Stanford, Jr. University.

There are 53 Colleges and Universities that use a Tiger as their mascot/name.
Let's see how many we can list, starting with:

Actually, the "Fighting Gobblers" never went away - Lane Stadium is still "Home of the Fighting Gobblers" and they still fire up the crowd with the turkey gobble during games.  "Hokie" is the more popular reference, just like the Georgetown "Hoyas" (whose mascot is an English Bulldog) or the University of North Carolina "Tar Heels" (a Ram) or even that other University in Virginia "Wahoos"  (a Cavalier).

As far as the rumor that VT was once slated to become "University of Virginia at Blacksburg," needless to say, such horrors exist only in the delusional minds of alumni of "The University" (said with nose in air and pinkie extended, naturally.)  Though I must admit, as a Hokie, I can't wait to see the next episode in the UVA soap opera that is Rector Helen Dragas and her merry band of Visitors versus (Past and Present) University President Teresa Sullivan, or as we call it, "The Real Housewives of Charlottesville."

(although, they could name the field, without renaming the stadium - which is a big trend now.)
