These last few months as I have been visitng Indiana Amish country, I was told about Hooples in Bremen, IN. On an earlier trip I had stopped by and sampled the menu, but I had forgotten my camera.

So EARLY wednesday 8-20-08, I headed out for an Indiana Roadfood adventure.

My goal was to enjoy a World Famous Hoople Burger at Hoople's in Bremen, IN. Try some of the South Side Soda Shop's awesome pie, in Goshen, IN. Then head south to king ribs in Indy.

However, as Robert Burns says "The best laid schemes o' mice an men gang aft agley"

I got to the South Side Soda Shop WAY to early and the were not open yet. (they open at 11am)

http://www.southsidesodashopdiner.com/

I headed over to Wakarusa and the dimestore for some more Jumbo Jelly Beans. I picked out 3 1 lb packs of jumbos - 1 orange, 1 lime and 1 cherry.

http://www.jumbojellybeans.com/

By this time it was 10am and I was hoping that Hoople's would be open, because I was getting hungry.

(sorry for the blurriness of photos I forgot my digital and had to use my cell phone camera)

I was in luck I arrived in Bremen about 10:30 and sure enough the OPEN sign was lit.

On the window the phrase "Home of the Hoople Burger" made me smile

Walking into Hooples is like walking into the past. In the main room there is a huge antique back bar with very large mirror.

Being early in the day there was no others in the place accept the owners.

I knew what I was going to order, the first time I was there I had ordered the regular Hoople Burger. This time I went for the Mushroom Hoople Burger, with fries.

They had some really interesting choices for appetizers and if I knew how the rest of the day would turn out, I would have tried some.

While waiting for my order I noticed this sign

Hot Beer, Lousy Food, Bad Service WELCOME have a nice day.

I took some other pictures of the various things around the inside.

Hooples making history, since 1882.

Here is my favorite

after I took this picture, I got my chance to get my pix taken with Hoople

Shortly after that my food arrived

My Mushroom Hoople Burger and waffle fries.

I REALLY wish I had remembered my digital camera, the cell phone camera just does not do this WONDERFUL burger justice.

This hand formed 1/3 lb patty cooked to perfection, with lots of mushrooms and melted cheese.

I must Thank everyone at Hoople's my visit was enjoyable and the food was AWESOME.

So back in my car and off to my next destination of the day

King Ribs in Indianapolis
http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Writeup.aspx?ReviewID=4598&RefID=1732

I headed down Keystone ave, which was VERY heavy with traffic, but alas i got there only to find a paper on the door "Closed due to funeral"

So I hit the Popeyes and got some jambalaya, and spicy chicken for the road.

I got back in time to have dinner at my mothers

Meatloaf, scalloped potatoes, home grown green beans, cheddar biscuits.

So all in all a mixed day of results, the best food of the day was the definately the mushroom Hoople burger.

I guess I should plan better, but sometimes it is just time to get out of the house for a while.

Holy cats Donald, you had yourself a day there! And those really aren't bad for cell phone pix.

Hi Cajun - Nice job...what's the difference between a Hopple Burger and a Hamburger or Cheeseburger?

There regular burgers are smaller (1/4lb) hockey pucks compared to the 1/3lb Hoople hand made with fresh ground beef.

Did I miss something or did you mean you did not take a pic of the burger because the cell phone was not good enough?

I thought the pics were good enough. I like the "hot beer" sign - they have the same sign at a little mom and pop place near me called Siver Dollars - a pancake house with really good food all day long.

Any trip report that quotes Robert Burns is okay with me. Actually, any trip report by CajunKing is okay with me, too! The one woman I work with still talks about those jumbo jelly beans you gave me and shared with my co-workers. I may have to call them up and have them send some to us.

Glad to see you get out and roam around some, since you enjoy it so much!

I went on line and created an account to order jelly beans, when it got to the S&H of $10 for 1 bag(and I'm not sure how much was in that bag), I backed out, my BF will have to settle for Brachs. I'll keep the site though for when the day may come that I can shell out that much.

1 bag is usually 1 pound unless you got the bulk bag which is 5 lbs
$10 does seem steep forshipping of 1 pound of jelly beans.

go shopping through the rest of the store and find some other old fashioned candy to go with it.

I love jelly beans. How big are those? Unless I missed it, there was no information to compare them with regular sized jelly beans.
                                  Thanks!
