Don, your selection of Killer Seafood restaurant was excellent and the lady that waited the table was super. She did a very good job with so many of us.

It was a real treat to host all of you from RF last night at Killer Seafood. I hope you all enjoyed the meal as much as we enjoyed your company and the opportunity to serve you. A special thanks to Cajun King for setting the whole Meet & Eat up. Can't wait to get a taste of his gumbo on Saturday!

              2-15-08 GUMBO COOKOFF PREP DAY

After a great breakfast at Sharon's Cafe, Dennis (lawdawg) and settled in for a day of gumbo making.

Dennis, getting the stock out of the cooler, all 4 gallons of it.

We set in to chop the veggies: 2 big onions, 2 red peppers, 2 green peppers, 2 yellow peppers, 2 orange peppers

1 of the onions was a little strong and made us teary eyed, but the chopping went quickly.

Veggies on to sweat, and roux just getting started

              ROUX = CAJUN NEPALM

Roux is very blond still more time to cook

Roux after slow cooking about 40 minutes, I normally cook my roux darker, but I was trying to get a thicker gumbo.

This is the point that I burnt the HEL* out of my left ring, middle and index finger, hence the comment ROUX = CAJUN NEPALM

Finally with the veggies sweated ad the roux done time to add everything together and start making some GUMBO.

              after an hour

We let the gumbo simmer for several hours before quick chilling it and putting it to bed. My dad and his wife had been out of the house all day so when they got home the smell of GUMBO about knocked them over as they entered the front door.

I felt good about my GUMBO this year, not over powering, just a nice blend of tastes and spices.

(as soon as I get back from dinner @ Killer Seafood I will post the pix from the gumbo cookoff)

                2-16-2008 GUMBO COOKOFF DAY

The morning came early, set up started at 7:30am, we made it about 8:30.

Loaded and ready to head over to Sunset Park.

It took us about 20 minutes to set up the shack and get the gumbo heating back up
As we were putting things together we were getting all sorts of looks and comments.

After we set up I went exploring the competition.

One of the reasons I come down here for this competition is for the view

Finally I was all set for the competition to begin

The crowd was really starting to pick up.

My granny and her friend Greg came down to root me on

My Uncle Dennis my Aunt was being camera shy

There ended up being over 7000 people attend this year's cookoff

There was good music and dancing (some of the little kids were so cute dancing)

The local girl scout troop sells cookies during the cookoff, the usually end up selling over 500 boxes of cookies during the day.

                NOW FOR THE RESULTS

I did not place in the top 3 this year, once again the top were ALL seafood entries

But there is more to this cookoof than awards.

At home it was cold, and at the cookoff it was 74 degrees and SUNNY.

So you decide which is better

It was good to see Tumbleweed365 again, she came by and sampled my entry.

I now even have my own fan club, Jamie has been coming the last 3 years and she won't eat ANYONE elses GUMBO, and she had 4 cups worth today.

                Now that made my day!!

Tonight we ate again at Killer Seafood, having a last meal with good friends until I get back down here again.

Tomorrow, we head to Mobile for a lunch meal with the BBQ Society and Glee Club. I am looking forward to seeing everyone again.

                            2-17-2008 ESCAPE FROM THE TORNADOS

My father woke me up at 5:00am before he went off to work, we didn't need to leave until 7:00am, so we finished packing the car, and with time to spare went had a last breakfast at Sharon's Cafe. (See earlier in this thread for photos of Sharon's)

We headed WEST along US 98 towards Mobile, we cut up to I-10 and sailed in Mobile in plenty of time to meet up with: Buffetbuster, Al and Janet, RickF and Jan, Seafarer John and Gail, AND Demi & Duff the wonder scotties

As we pulled into the parking lot at Dreamland BBQ, the radio was going off with a TORNADO WARNING for Baldwin and Mobile Counties, HEY, we are in that area!!

The doors were opened right at 11:00 and the group went when, we found a good spot towards the back of the main room, and sat down. Our waitress brought out Dreamland's sauce and a loaf of white bread.

(you are supposed to dip the bread in the sauce as an appetizer)

Dreamland's sauce is a thinner sauce that has some zing to it (vinegar and red pepper, but not carolina style)

It was truly an honor of meeting Buffetbuster, he proved just why he is one of my rf heros, it was just 11:00am and he had already stopped for dessert.

I had a real good time talking with him, I look forward to further eating adventures with him.

Al and Janet were the perfect hosts for our meal

Rick and Jan Flynn (RickF) sat at the other end of the table, I really wanted to get to talk to them some more.

Seafarer John & Gail sat across from me, it was good to see them again.

I was in the mood for some pulled pork and sausage, potato salad and mac & cheese

The pulled pork was good and had a mix of burnt ends and inner meat, the sausage was well smoked.

In the past I have really enjoyed their mac and cheese and their potato salad.

The mac and cheese did not disappoint me, ok I was disappointed that it went TOOO QUICKLY.

The potato salad did disappointment me, the potatos were watery and there was just no flavor to it this time. I did not eat it all

I also ordered another serving of the sausage, the first was that good. The second one however came out BURNT on one side.

Lawdawg gave me one of his bones from his ribs, and it was tough and chewy, like they were still using yesterday's ribs.

I have had Dreamland and The Brick Pit, and I am agreeing with Buffetbuster, The Brick Pit was much better. (Sorry Seafarer John)

After sitting and enjoying our meal, I ordered Dreamland's Banana Puddin'

It was just like I had remembered it being, creamy, dense, full of banana and nilla wafers, I could have eaten 20 servings of the wonderful stuff.

I was confused though here I was sitting across from my dessert idol, and HE wasn't having any. That is when BB said he was going to explore elsewhere beofre his plane was due to take off.

The tv was playing in the background at Dreamland and during the whole lunch, the weather crawler was giving updates of the Extreme Weather in the area, in fact as we sat and ate lunch at Dreamland, a tornado went through Baldwin county about 12 miles from where we were eating lunch.

Not wanting to get caught up in any further weather delays, we quickly said our good byes. I hated leaving everyone like that, but we also had an 11 hour drive back home still to come.

BB & I exchanged treats, He got the "John Deere" mix Jumbo Jelly Beans, and he gave me a box of Chocolate covered peanuts from the A&M Peanut shop.

I snacked on a few on the trip home, and have been snacking on them this morning.

This is where the trip gets WILD

As we left Dreamland, headed north on I-65, we started to see emergency vehicles all over the place. The radio was breaking in with a new weather warning every 2 minutes are so.

We had just missed the tornado that went through Baldwin county, but there were more coming.

As we drove through torrential rains and hail and winds, we were staying 1/2 a county ahead of the tornado warnings, by the time we reached Montgomery, there were already reports of damage and destruction all the way south to Mobile.

During the drive through Montgomery, our luck changed, NOT FOR THE GOOD the line of storms that had been spawing the tornadoes to the south of us started spawning them to our north.

Driving up I-65 just ahead we watched a funnel cloud cross I-65

We were just entering the town of Prattville, when all HELL broke loose

                            http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2008/02/update_riley_visits_stormdamag.html

We were less than 2 miles ahead of the tornado the damaged more than 300 homes, left thousands without power and injured hundreds.

We were running low on fuel and Durbin Farms was coming up at exit 205. At the top of the exit ramp I instantly knew something was seriously wrong.

The mobile homes in the distance has part of their roofs missing, the place that sold camper shell for pick up trucks, has the shells laying all over the median down on I-65.

The stop light was out, in fact the pole holding the stop light was bent at a 45 degree angle.

The police were shutting off the exit ramps behind us. Durbin farms building recieve minor damage, but the BP and Taco Bell across the way were not so lucky, neither was the Days Inn, its roof was laying in it's parking lot.

We asked the officer to let us back on the interstate to head back north, the trooper asked where we were coming from and when I told him, he shook hi head and said "You boys are damn lucky to be alive"

If we were just a few minutes longer at Dreamland.....

We drove in rain until Birmingham, and then it was hit or miss showers all the way home.

                            We arrived safely about 11:15pm.

This will be a trip I will always remember. Starting out in an ice storm, perfect weather in FLA, and Tornados chasing us North through Alabama. I got to meet up with some great roadfooders, and sample some great food.

Is it next President's Day weekend yet??

                                  Don,
We are very glad you made it safely ! We had some heavy downpours as we left Alabama un US 98. The dogs had no bed to hide under (their normal reaction to thunder and bright lightening) so they just curled up between Jan and I on the front seat and pretended it wasn't happening. By the time we reached Hattiesburg we had come out of it and it was sunny and blue skies again.
Today it stayed in the 50's all the way up to Memphis, then started cooling off late in the day.

Thanks for posting the photos. We don't often see ourselves in these reports as we are usually the ones with the camera in hand. Check my thread tomorrow to see the action as we experienced it.

                                  See you soon

It was a real pleasure to finally meet you (and your friend) down in Mobile! I'm glad you are enjoying the chocolate covered peanuts. The jumbo jelly beans were a big hit with the ladies at work yesterday.

That is incredibly scary looking at the photos of what you drove through getting home. I'm just thankful you left when you did and arrived home safely.

The weather where I was wasn't too bad at all. By 2:00 that afternoon, it was beautiful blue skies in Mobile, which I was very happy about since I had to fly out later.

Yeah, I kind of whiffed on the banana pudding and I am regretting it now, considering how much I love BP. But I had at least one more full full meal to go before I left town and I wanted to make sure I had room.

Looking forward to seeing you later this year when I am in the Cincy area.

Cajun: I was ahead of the storms as I left Mobile about 6:30AM CST. I made it to Atlanta and was watching the Daytona when the storms hit there. I was at the Renaissance by Marriott directly across the runway from the concourses at Hartsfield and the storm was so intense, you could not see the area.

I believe from the pics you posted that the area you were in was much more severe that what I experienced.

Thanks again for introducing us to Killer Seafood in Mexico Beach. I sincerely enjoyed the time with the group.

I am glad everyone there enjoyed them, I totally enjoyed the chocolate covered peanuts. If weather permits me on tuesday I am going to head back up to The Dime Store in Wakarusa. I did not have enough time to investigate all their candy.

I was looking at their website and found several "Old School" candies I loved as a kid, and have not seen for years. That and my wife's birthday is coming and they make their own "maple" candies and she is a maple nut. (I also didn't pick up any cinnamon jelly beans for her either she was

Also they said they would have more Boylan's Soda back in.

I had a great time on this trip, escaping from ice and snow, sunning in 75 degree beautiful weather, running through tornados, and now have made a full circle with 1 inch of ice at home.

I made another quick trip up "The Dime Store" in Wakarusa, Indiana for some more jelly beans and Easter Candy.

They say they are the home of the Jumbo Jelly Bean well....

                                                6 Jelly Beans = 8 Inches long

These jelly beans are HUGE, they have a real good flavor.

I have been eating my bag of orange one for the last 2 days, no wonder my blood sugar was over 350

Jelly beans . . . M&Ms, jelly beans . . . M&Ms . . .? Difficult choice at Easter time. I usually grab the M&Ms promotions around the holidays but Easter does mean jelly beans.

I wasn't sure if I should add these photos here or in wanderingjew's "Wandering Around the South" thread, so I will add a couple here and a few there.

After a pretty long, but easy drive up from Orlando, can I just tell you how happy I was to see this sign in the window at Killer Seafood?

It seems as though our good friend Bushie has gotten a little shy around these parts lately. Most people were unaware of this, but he actually met me, wanderingjew, and Sundancer7 out in front of Killer Seafood for a quick photo.

It's a shame that Bushie couldn't stay for dinner, but it was nice that he could drop by for a short time, anyway.

They had a nice selection of daily specials, too, in addition to the Simmerin' Bowl.

Sundancer looks very pleased with his selection of fried foods. As mentioned by others, those hush puppies were excellent.

CajunKing has a better picture of the Simmerin' Bowl in his report, but I am including for the sake of telling a story.

Both CajunKing and the owners were surprised that I knew where the concept for their restaurant came from. I have mentioned on this site previously, my fondness for a place out in Marina Del Rey called Killer Shrimp. They said that I was the only person who ever made that connection. While the restaurants are very different, I could tell that Killer Shrimp was the inspiration for Killer Seafood. Given the distance between the two restaurants, I don't think anyone is stealing the either places business away. While I thought the Simmerin' Bowl was excellent, I am probably still a little partial to Killer Shrimp out in California.

I even made my own attempt at Killer Shrimp a while back and it turned out pretty well.

All in all, it was a great start to a wonderful weekend. It was nice to meet new friends and catch up with some that I hadn't seen in awhile. Big thanks to CajunKing for organizing this!

Why do you think I travel 13 hours one direction to ENJOY this competition each year????

Coming out of winter here in the northlands, it is my first view of Spring and what is to come. The scenery is AWESOME too.
