Cajun/Seafood around New Orleans Thu, 07/9/09 12:40 PM (permalink)
I am traveling to Donaldsonville/New Orleans for business.  I have two free nights for dinner.  I'm looking for suggestions for restaurants for cajun and/or seafood.  Doesn't have to be fancy, just good food.  Hopefully something with music but not required.

I've heard about places in the area where you sit at a picnic table, covered with newspaper and then the crawfish is dumped on the table.  Any of those in the area that can be recommended.

Thanks
Cindy

In New Orleans go to Cochon. http://www.cochonrestaurant.com/html/menu.html
Wander Magazine Street, go in and out of the shops and stop for a peacemaker at Mahoney's http://mahonyspoboys.com/
There are truly so many delicious choices in New Orleans, but if I had only 2 nights I'd choose Cochon and Luke. http://www.lukeneworleans.com/

I really enjoyed Mother's.  It specializes in Po Boys, and I thought the gumbo was great.

If you go you'll wait in line outside.  The line can get pretty long, but goes quickly.  You then order and find a seat.  While your waiting outside they'll usually offer a free "world famous" bloody mary.

I like this place so much I went twice during my three day stay.

they'll even offer you one of their apparently world famous bloody mary's while you wait in line.  The line goes quickley

The Gumbo Shop - 630 St. Peter - (lunch and dinner), several varieties of gumbo and other dishes including a "combination plate" sampler of local favorites

Mr. B's  - 201 Royal St (lunch and dinner) for their signature Gumbo Ya Ya and BBQ Shrimp

Johnny's Po Boys - 511 St Louis - (lunch only) roast beef and seafood po boys

Napoleon House - 500 Chartres St for their signature Pimm's Cup or anything cold, also muffaletas (closing for vacation 7/14)

Out of the French Quarter - Mandina's 3800 Canal St - (lunch and dinner), everything from po'boys, turtle, soup, fried seafood, and daily specials (cash only but they have an ATM)

Summer restaurant dining is very slow right now - I'd suggest googling "NOLA summer dining specials, and you'll find summer specials for lunches and dinners at some of the high end restaurants like Bayona and Galatoire's.

Deannie's Seafood in the quarter.  Excellent fried seafood and super bbq shrimp.

            Yep, Deanie's.

Keep in mind, it's not Crawfish or really Oyster season right now.

Shrimp and, I believe, crab are in season now.

Pascal's Manale for New Orleans-style BBQ Shrimp, which has nothing to do with BBQ.

Go to Coop's on Decatur. It's a favorite of locals and tourists alike.

Donaldsonville is, I believe, located in Cajun Country - Ascension Parish. Go where they tell you, eat what they give you. :)

Make sure to stop for cafe au lait and Beignets at Cafe du Monde

Also, I have to add that August, Cochon, and Luke, while excellent, are not by any means "cheap eats", unless they have a lunch special.
