California Here we come

This has been a baseball summer for the Chips family. Sam played American Legion Ball for about 30 games and senior Little League ball for about 20 games. Senior Little League is for 15 and 16 year olds and the World Series destination is Bangor, Maine,not Williamsport. Sam's team won the district championship two weeks ago and this past weekend in Salem Sam's team won the state tournament with Sam getting the game winning hit that won the tournament for his team that sent them to the regional which will be held in Upland, California next week. Needless to say, Trudy and I are proud that Sam's hard work all summer paid off. We will be accompanying the team to the tournament. We would like to see any roadfooders who would be willing to brave the wilds of San Bernardino county and would welcome any recommendations people might have for eats.

I'll have to talk to Ellen.  She's going to be here on the 9th and we plan to hit the Inland Empire.

We both are looking forward to Joeys BBQ, (4 locations in the San Bernardino area...

I'm flying in to LAX on Aug 5th and staying till Aug 11th.  I'll be doing as much RFing as I can, but I have a lot of family obligations while I'm out there.

However, at my mom's request, the first stop after the airport will be Ceilito Lindo for Taquitoes!

Are you flying into ONT or LAX? If ONT, my first stop would be the Farmer Boys on Milliken just south of the 10 freeway. Great Burgers and their breakfast are cheap and custom cooked also. There are more of this local chain around the Upland - San Berdoo area.
  The Foothill Blvd (Rt 66) strp has developed so much since I left that I will encourage 'Fire Capt' our RF Agent in Fontana to post his Taco Stand suggestions which are much more 'up-to-date' than mine would be..

Upland is the home of our last SoCal family member (Janet's Mom) so it is a destination for us on any SoCal visit.

Hopefully we will find better weather than I hear you guys are experiencing now.

we'll start by the LAX area, and head EAST to the Inland Empire, (Upland, etc)

And we are making a pit stop for homemade pastrami at the OINKSTER in Eagle Rock (by Pasadena) .... 
(our first plans were for Langer's , but they are closed Sundays)

I'm sure there will be plenty more San Bernadino suggestions coming for you, Mr. Chips...
I'll also be doing lots of Mexican food during my week in L.A.
and you guys probably will, too !!!  Lots and lots of choices...
even  going thru the drive thru at those Alberto's places can take care of those late night munchies ...

I love my beef ribs and pastrami, but many others go to Southern Cal. for the Sushi & smoothies !!  Whatever works best for YOU, Mr. Chips....  enjoy!!!

The plan at this time is that Trudy will fly into Ontario Sunday morning August 2nd and I will ride with the team as a chaperone, leaving Portland on Sunday morning and arriving in Southern California Monday afternoon on August 3rd. The tournament will be pool play which means Sam's team will play four games in 5 days starting August 4th and two other games if they advance. Our options will be a little limited but we will do what we can.

Ellen, you should try Nate'n Al's in Beverly Hills, very good Jewish Deli, see a Movie Star or 2, to boot!

I've been to both those joints...  (used to live in L.A.) Nate 'n Al's has the old fashioned deli atmosphere, and those old time movie producers , etc hanging out....  I think their pastrami is just "okay"... (not all that),  but I'm sure there is plenty of other good stuff there...
 
I do actually like Pink's, as I enjoy the flavor of their Hoffy brand they use...
however, I usually just get a Pink's hot dog from the cart inside the Hollywood Park Casino in Inglewood, by LAX..
(no waiting!)

Almost!! Espescially if we had some of the Florida Roadfooders joining us... then we'd have all four corners represented!!
 
However, I am thrilled to be doing our "East Coast - West Coast"   meating of the minds and stomachs!!
And we can be flexible with our schedules and pit stops since it's just the 2 of us...

   You don't say what field(s) you will be playing on. There is a major Baseball complex next to the Quakes Minor League field on FootHill in Rancho Cucamonga that "could" be the location. Even if not, the Foothill strip between Upland and San Bernardino has a number of Mexican and Asian and Burger and even chain locations that can give you a lot of variety without traveling into L A.

Hospitality Lane on the south side of San Berdoo (near the interchange for the 10 and 215), has a strip of major restaurants as well. You may find a number of national chains as well as some local ethnic foods there.

Al, we will be playing at Little League complexes in Ontario and Upland and I'm not sure of the location of the fields.

Ontario and Upland "straddle" the 10 Freeway just outside L A County. Other than the airport and the Farmer Boys (several of them) I mentioned earlier, Trudy may want to make a walk-thru Shopping stop at the Ontario Mills Mall. California Speedway, The big NASCAR Track built on the old Kaiser Steel land just east of the 15 Freeway runs tours that can be fun for those interested in that 'sport'.
  Don't forget the Mission Inn in Riverside, if you are looking for a 'special dinner' in a landmark location.

Farmer Boys makes an excellent breakfast burrito.

I dripped one on me from Fontana all the way to Palm Springs.

I've never been there and today's Restaurant of The Day looks amazing.

Wish we could get some response  from the Fire Capt there in Fontana. He knows that area very well. I don't think (with the pressures of the games and team/group eating choices) you folks will be wandering around the L A area...but rather be limited to SOME of the Inland Empire.
