Calling out to Roadfood buddies who know Peoria, Illinois

Calling out to Roadfood buddies who know Peoria, Illinois. My son just accepted a job there, at the Archer Daniels Midland corn processing facility. I know nothing about Peoria, but you can bet that I will become an expert super fast! I'm sure that Archer Daniels Midland will also have information to provide to my son, but we just found out about the job offer and haven't received all the info yet, but I'm dying to know information NOW !!! LOL LOL !!! Does anyone have suggestions about great neighborhoods with lots of rental apartments or rental condos that would be good for a 23 year old young man starting out in his first full-time adult job? Does Peoria have an area where younger people would have more fun living, closer to restaurants, music, bars, etc? While looking for a rental home with reasonable rent, are there economically depressed or dangerous neighborhoods in Peoria that one should avoid? Does anyone have an idea of what would be reasonable rent for a nice 1-bedroom or 2-bedroom apartment or condo in Peoria?

I am sending you a PM since I doubt if the other Roadfooders care about permanent housing in the Peoria area.

I recall a good BBQ place near the U of I Med School. Big Jim's (guessing at a poor memory of the name) BUT, having a Major Med School located in the town would seem to mean that there is some sort of acceptable social life for 'young' people !!! Good Luck to your Son in the Corn World.

Good Luck to your Son in the Corn World. Al, it was Big John's and sadly, it is long gone, with the area taken over by the ever-expanding medical school. His son is trying to make a go of it out on McClure Avenue, taking over an old Hardee's building, but I think he is struggling somewhat.

Here's a link to a restaurant guide for Peoria. Most of my in-law family lives on the northwest side and when we go to Peoria for visits we generally stay in a hotel around the Grand Prairie Mall area which is on the far northwest side off of War Memorial Drive. There are a lot of restaurants around the mall area and along War Memorial especially near the Northwoods Shopping Center and I-74. The guide is pretty comprehensive and if you flip through the tabs it will give you a lot of information http://www.peoria.org/restaurants

There are many more restaurants in the Peoria area than the 109 listed here, and a lot of them are better (and probably more Roadfoody) than these. A restaurant has to pay a fee* to get on this list put out by the Convention and Visitors Bureau. You will notice there are no Chinese restaurants and very few other ethnic ones other than Italian listed, though there are well over 10 Chinese restaurants, several Mexican, as well as Mongolian, Indian, Vietnamese, German and Lebanese restaurants in the Greater Peoria area. All told, the restaurant section in the Yellow Pages of the phone book runs for 23 pages! * Note: While I can understand that the CVB needs money to operate, this "fee for listing" has been a sore point with me for a long time since even churches have to pay a fee to get listed, and as a result only 9 churches are on the CVB list, even though there are well over 400 churches in the Peoria area.

Obviously you have a bone to pick with the Peoria CVB! I sent the link as a starting point, not the end all and be all of information about Peoria. I don't think anyone comes to Roadfood expecting to get all 23 pages of the Yellow Pages of information on any location! Best yet, why not give her a few of your favorites, that's more meaningful anyway. I'll give you mine and it's not on the CVB list! Khaki Jacks, which is basically a bar with darn good food and very much a Roadfood kind of place! Khaki Jack's 7223 North Allen Road Peoria, Il 309-691-8010
