It's been a cold winter & when I was in the store the other day I stopped at the Campbell's section looking for a soup.  To my surprise there is now a Campbell's Homestyle Maryland Crab soup!  I was tempted, then I started to read the ingredients.  I stopped when I read green peppers! No way!!  I put the can back & walked away.  I just need to make my own batch, the way my Momma taught me in Baltimore.

I remember my parents making "SOS" on a weekend morning out of ground beef and Campbell's mushroom soup. Not until many years later did I find out what "SOS" stood for!

katandmoon Some years later, I liked Campbell's Chicken Won Ton soup and Chili Beef (R.I.P.) Soups very much. But my favorite became Tomato Bisque. It was so rich and yummy , and I loved it so much that I could literally eat it out of the can with a spoon.

I was looking through my supermarket's Campbell's Soup collection (my wife likes the very difficult to find Chicken Barley), and saw the Wonton soup. We also saw the price: over $3 a can (most of the soups were more like $1 a can). I can buy a quart of the fresh-made stuff from my local Chinese take-out place (about 3 blocks from my home) for about the same.

leethebard:  I just returned from Walmart in Brainerd and they had about 8 or 10 cans of Campbell's Chicken Gumbo.   I've never noticed it before so I don't know if it's a standard item, but it may be.  If they have it next visit, I can send you some cans if you like.

Of course in the late '80s-early '90s, Campbell's tried to make lunch even faster with "Souper Combos" (a bowl of soup, like Tomato, & a grilled cheese sandwich both on a microwave tray; in the frozen foods section) -- TV commercials sounded like a takeoff on Sinatra's "Love and Marriage".  Product was off the market just over a year later.

Re:Campbell's Classic Chicken Gumbo. Where???? 2014/04/23 14:35:08 (permalink)
Follow up on my find of Chicken Gumbo. Had another can for lunch today. It is NOT the same recipe of the 50's. Pronounced last of Bell peppers, and little,if any Ocra. It definitely doesn't taste like the soup I ate all the time in the 50's.
I called Campbells to find out why. Had a nice talk with a very nice gentleman in customer service. He did admit Campbell's does change recipes, but said he'd try to find out what was done to the Chicken Gumbo. Apparently they've had other calls about it. In the conversation he also admitted many people ask for Scotch Broth(another childhood favorite of mine) which was discontinued a few years back,,,although it is still sold in Canada, where they have a large Scotch population. So I put my two cents in, asking for its return. Got to thinking, any of you notice recipe changes in Campbells soups? Oh, I know about the salt, not talking about that. I did learn that Chicken Gumbo had had a reduction in salt, but complaints about taste, let to another reformulation, which could account for why I didn't recognize the taste of the new product. So any soups taste different from your childhood memories? For good or bad?

I agree. The chicken gumbo does not taste the same. I too miss the Scotch Britney
