Cart need VIN number? Fri, 06/6/08 8:25 PM (permalink)
I am in Canada and want to import a cart from US (Top Dog Carts in Orlando) BTW anybody knows this manufacturer? His name is Jim.
I was informed by Registar of Imported Vehicles in Canada and Customs that the cart needs a VIN number and a US compliant sticker in order to be able to cross the border into Canada.
The manufacturer never heard of it and never built a cart that needed a valid 17 digit VIN number. He uses his self made identification 8 digit number for his carts that has nothing to do with a valid VIN number.
Any of you experienced similar problems?
How long does it take for this manufacturer register its business with NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Assoc-USA) and I finally receive my cart?
Any help is appreciated.

Might be faster to find a manufacturer that already does what you need

Thing is I already paid a deposit for it and the cart is ready...
Maybe another manufacturer would agree to sell under the table one of his own VIN numbers?
I researched many cart before deciding for Top Dogs. They have real long counter giving a great customer service experience.
I´m lost... Don´t know what to do.

Just cross the border and get it plated in the states, then tow it back with ya. (Just a thought here, but then you'd have a legal title and registration).

The cart was made in the US... and doesn't have a VIN number?? Did "Jim" give you a bill of sale (it should be on that). There should also be a plate on the inside/storage part of the cart which should have it as well. How do you make a cart... with wheels... to be towed behind another vehicle... without a VIN number.

If "Jim" can't come up with one, you might tell Jim you want your deposit back and find another dealer who does things the right way. I used Island Time Hot Dog Carts out of Clearwater, FL, and I got a VIN number without asking for one.

              What happened to CSD's post??

Anyway, to answer pdxyyz's question: "Why would a trailer need/have a VIN?"
Don't you put a plate on the back end of any given trailer that you pull behind your vehicle??? or is that a state-to-state thing?

In Massachusetts (and I'm sure in many other states), if it fits on your trailer hitch (trailer of any kind, camper, pop-up, utility trailer.... or mobile food cart) and it has wheels and it travels on pavement, it has to have a plate from the RMV... for which you need a VIN number to obtain the plate.

Oklahoma does not require licensing trailers. Its optional, some do to make it easier to track if stolen but then you get assesed on them.

I built a trailer from a kit and the manufacture supplied a VIN for it. I had to use that to apply for a lic. and plate for IL. Seems from all of the posts that the state requirements vary and trailer manufactures is varying also. I would think if the manufacturer wants to sell they would help you on this or if they can't do it, the only other option would be to select a trailer that the manufacturer can fit the state requirements. Its a "title of origin" that should be given to you by the trailer dealer, that has a serial number affixed to it. Bought the cart from Custom sales, and the trailer has the numbers affixed to it, as well as hidden numbers inside the cart. Any trailer sold new should have a title of origin with it...other than that, be careful.

If Canada requires a VIN number for a trailer, then there should be a system for you to register a "homebuilt" trailer and obtain a gov. issued number. Then send the number the manufacture to put on the trailer.

Hello everyone, new to the forum. I'm in negotiations to buy a used cart (All American) 5 or six years old in sweet shape. All she has is a hand written receipt from the last seller. Do I need a title in Florida? Original receipt? Does it have to have a tag and if so, what does DMV require? I know I would be better off buying new but I'm on a budget and this seems an excellent deal. Thanks for your help.

Did the owner have the cart tagged? If so, get the last tag receipts and have these noted on the bill of sell. This should clear and tranfer the title. You may have to pay a tranfer fee if this is an out of state cart, plus sales taxes. You need to check with the DMV for details.
