The weather was certainly in our favor yesterday and a great time was had by all...

We had 14 folks altogether in attendance.

Also missing from the 1st group photo  posted Miami Don are Waltpiii who had to leave a little early as well as Paulde who also couldn't make it to the last stop...

Great to meet the Roadfood gang.  The food was fabulous!  I had the Hash Benedict at Modern and Veal with Peppers at Angelo’s.  They were both Scrumptdidellyumptious!!!  Looking forward to the next get together.

Here are the photos that I took, along with a bit of narrative:

I missed breakfast at the Modern Diner, so my first meet-up was at Angelo’s Civita Farnese on Federal Hill in Providence.

A couple of folks at my table opted for the house grinder.  It looks to me like it needs a little oil and vinegar!

 
Waltpiii, I believe, had this veal sub:

 
Wanderingjew had an antipasto salad:

 
Ayersian and I had the snail salad.  I believe this is scungilli, or sea-snail – sort of like conch.

 
I felt that the vinegar, hot peppers and oregano were the prominent flavors, and they sort of masked the “snail”.
After finishing at Angelo’s, we walked to DePasquale square, which is lined with small restaurants and shops.  Our destination was Palmieri’s Bakery and Caffe.

Tomato Pizza Strip

  I got to taste the pizza strip, which is a local specialty.  It tasted like a nice thick-crust, tomato-sauce only pizza.  I wonder how it compares to the NJ tomato pies?

Our next stop was supposed to be Wein-o-Rama, but we got Travelin’-Manned, and it was closed.  We headed, instead, to Olneyville NY System, for Rhode Island Hot Weiners and Coffee Milk.

The greek meat sauce seemed a bit dry to me, and the “all the way” version with celery salt was very salty.  If you can imagine a coffee Yoo-Hoo, that’s what the coffee milk was like.  I’d have to try the hot weiner a few more times to figure out what would be my favorite way to order it.

Great, great pics, Don!  Sorry I couldn't make it.  Those hot weiners and pizza strips look great.  If had known there was Allie's Donuts I would've blown off my friend (not really).  I think the pastry Karilyn is holding is a sfogliatelle, one of my all-time favorite Italian desserts!

My friend Terri and I had a great time.  Thanks, Beth and Dale, for all your work in putting this together.  The place I liked best was the Modern Diner.  Breakfast is my favorite meal and they make a wonderful breakfast.  My eggs over medium and corned beef hash (with a side order of linguica hash to taste and share with the table) were great.  The lobster grits were also tasty. 

The company was fun, the food was good and the weather was beautiful.  It was a great day!

It needed more than oil and vinegar.  I got the grinder and was disappointed.  I am used to Italian heroes such as those at Casapulla's (sorry, no photo), with no boiled ham and substantially more and varied Italian cold cuts, and yes, a bit of oil and I believe they also sprinkle some oregano.  Also, the bread was very soft and I prefer a crustier roll.
 
However, the escarole and broth was great, and I tried Chris' snail (scungilli) salad and it was very tasty.  That might be because of the dressing on the salad, but nevertheless I liked it.  And the pizza strips at Palmieri's rounded out the Italian lunch very nicely!
 
This was my first meet 'n greet and what made the day for me was the enjoyable company.  I think I could have skipped, though, the glimpse behind the scenes of the shop next to Palmieri's.......!

Not at all. Most of the Italian Rolls here are  crusty and glutinous very similiar if not identical to what I used to enjoy back in NY.
 
Although I've been to Angelo's only a handful of times (probably less) it's the most casual restaurant on the hill, and I usually stick to the typical "red sauce" traditional items since that is what they do best., in fact if I hadn't had so much for breakfast, I would have, although the antipasta salad was still pretty decent.

My friend Terri enjoyed her lasagna.  My first instinct was to go for a small serving of pasta with sauce, but then I saw the escarole and broth on the menu, and the grinder, and I thought "soup and sandwich" and I would take most of the sandwich back to the hotel, etc.

It was a very small miss in a day of many hits, as far as I am concerned.  And, it really is a matter of individual taste -- the young man across from me (I can't remember his name) also got the grinder and he really enjoyed it.

So, to each his own, and thanks to everyone for sharing so I could taste what you got!

I had the veal and peppers with a side of linguine.  I expected it to be a sauté but it was actually braised veal with green bell peppers.  The resulting sauce was fabulous.  Each bite of veal had the pronounced taste of the peppers.  A really great dish.
