While visiting my son in Austin over the long 4th of July weekend, we finally
made it out to Smitty's Market in Lockhart. The ribs were, ok. The links, ok.
But! The smoked brisket was THE BEST! On a par or, even better? than Louis Mueller in Taylor. All I can tell you food roadies is it was GREAT brisket.
One more thing. If you go, have their beans! They WERE the best anywhere!

I second your recommendation of the places you listed...But I must comment !! When I saw the title of the topic I got the vision of one of my favorite Central California stops... The Central Texas BBQ in Castroville, CA near the shore of Monterey Bay (a bit north of Old Ft Ord). We make it a point to arrive during a lunch-stop whenever we pass thru 'Artichoke Country'. It isn't Louis Mueller's by a long shot, but it serves very good BBQ at reasonable prices.

Al, with all due respect. As I've said before. if you live in Texas and visit California, why eat BBQ with all that wonderful (very) fresh fish, crab, veggies, fruit, Caesar salad, crusty bread, local cheeses, wine and most important.........
In-N-out burgers at your disposal? (lol)

I believe that the Mayor used to live in that area of California. Further, I don't recall him saying that he has ever lived in Texas. When visiting for a day/weekend/week, eating only the most local foods is a great suggestion, but when you live somewhere for awhile, even In-N-Out burgers would get old.

He NOW goes whenever he passes through, as in "old stomping grounds" sort of thing. I do the same when I am in NY, and people look at me like I am nuts. How often can I go to Katz's Deli every time I am in NY, and pass up some of the other wonderful eats? Old stomping grounds.

Al, please correct me if I haven't connected all the dots.

Tempest in a teapot, my friends! I did reside in Southern California for many years, and visited Monterey and Castroville many times over those years. My point was visual recognition of the 'name' and association with pleasant memories from a generation gone by.

Thanks for the debate "with manners". It shows how differing points of view can be presented KINDLY!
