Chain restaurants open Christmas? Mon, 12/19/05 7:31 PM (permalink)
Other than Waffle House, does anyone know of any chains that are open on Christmas Day? We will not be sharing any kind of meal and as little time as possible with the rest of the family, and we need somewhere to go.

They have to be located in the Southeast, BTW. As much as I love White Castle, the nearest one is in the next state north.

That's about the saddest post I've ever read. Please come to my house for Christmas afternoon or evening. We're nearby and friendly.

Somehow, I feel a hook being baited...

Nope, no hook. I just happen to be in the horrible situation of living with my in-laws. Long story as to how we got here, but the situation is pretty bad right now. That along with my depression just makes things worse.

We were seriously to the point where we'd rather head over to the casinos and have lunch together instead of getting together with the rest of the family. We're going to give it a try with the family, though. Just please, keep me in your thoughts this season.

        Thanks.

Not a chain by any means, but how about a Chinese restaurant? Last year my wife, mother, sister, and I when to a Chinese restaurant on Christmas (the rest of the family was getting into town the next day). It was very busy, including a table of 20 or so Mexicans, all in this middle sized town in Indiana.

And who can forget that great Christmas flick, A Christmas Story.

As a very irreverent soul, "Bad Santa" is a hoot.I also endorse the suggestion for Chinese.

              Hello All,
Kai'leen, you have my sympathy. My first father-in-law hated me so much that the only time I was allowed in his home
was on holidays. It was difficult, and I assure you that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
As I have gotten older, I do not judge him any longer. I was a stranger invading his life. We were opposites, and
while I did not try to disturb him, my presence disrupted his haven, plus, I had taken his "little girl" from him.
Every family has it's traditions of joy and pain. You and your mate should do something alone to establish your
oneness, then bite your tongue and try as best as you can to be with the in-laws in a civil way. You may find your
mate recognizes and appreciates this more than you know, and that will create a greater bond than the horror you experience over
              the holidays.
Please, have a special time with your mate and be as generous as you can be to your mate's in-laws. When the in-laws are dead,
you will have a clean conscience and your mate will not blame you for hating them.
              Take Care,
              Fieldthistle

Feildthistle, you are a very wise person. Kaileen, many of us have been in similar situations, and I will certainly hold a close thought for you.

I totally understand the in-law thing, especially if you have the misfortune to have married into a fighting family. I would rather go to Waffle House for Christmas than to my in-laws. The whole family fights over politics and religion at the table and ancient fights from the 1970's are revisited. Can you say, "my appetite is gone!".
If you want to go away, go for it! Next year my husband and I will probably go to the Bahamas over Christmas.

I do go to a Waffle House on Christmas. I go twice, in fact. Once for breakfast and once in the afternoon for lunch/dinner. I'd just go for breakfast, but the apizza delivery places and the Chinese carryouts around here are closed on Christmas. Even White Castles are closed on Christmas.

Steak and Shake? The local hospital, in Charlotte a good idea if near the old Presbie.

Waffle House would be my choice however...Go for the steak and eggs.

As far as having a crappy family that you wanted to get away from...welcome to the crowd. I had an aunt that would throw packages on the front lawn as she drove by to avoid having to speak.

My FIL hated me as deeply as a man could hate another man. I was sleeping w/ his baby...two children proved it. We left flowers on his grave today, and after my wife went back to the car, just a bit of spit.

I think I will be doing Waffle House on Sunday evening. I want the hash browns with a T Bone, waffle and a couple of eggs over hard.

Christmas, family, fast food. It can be a tough time.

Jimmy Durante as Banjo sums it up great in "The Man who Came to Dinner" (1941) when he sings, "Did you ever get the feeling that you wanted to go, but you wanted to stay?"

If you consider all the money I've spent in Waffle House restaurants since my first visit in 1972 I ought to own a bunch of them. However, knowing how hard the owner of the ones I go to works, I'll take a pass and remain a customer.

I had to travel on Christmas Day and all the truck stop restaurants along the way were open. The Flying J stop in LaSalle, Il on I-80 had a line out the door! We wound up eating at the Pine Cone stop the next exit west off I-80 and had a great meal served by friendly people. It's important to get a good meal before Christmas dinner at the in-laws because meals there are usually pretty inedible, SIL totally under cooked the turkey so I pretty much lived off of chex mix before and a drop of potato, a drop of green beans and one slice of ham during the dinner.
