Charge for "extra" BBQ sauce

They really raved about the BBQ there and next time I'm in the area I'll give it a try. One thing I' noticed while looking at the online menu was it stated each serving of BBQ came with 2oz of sauce. "Extra" sauce was $.35 for 2 oz. I thought this was quite unusual and don't believe I've ever seen a BBQ place charge for more sauce. The prices were quite reasonable though.

I don't recall ever seeing an extra charge for sauce to be used on the food being served.

I've heard of restaurants charging for extra salad dressing (a practice that tends to chap my buns), but I've never encountered a barbecue restaurant charging for extra sauce.  Two ounces (4 tablespoons) may not be enough for some barbecue lovers, and would I be indignant at finding an extra charge on the ticket.  Just my opinion, of course.  If their sauce is that good, they can make hay by selling a bottled version in their country store and not nickel-and-diming the diners.

If you eat in here you can have all the sauce you want, 7 different kinds...to go's get a certain amount of the 2 oz. containers of sauce, usually the "Old Fashioned", unless otherwise requested. We do sell pints and gallons of it.

Actually, not that uncommon; I've seen it in numerous establishments.  I don't agree with the practice, but it's not unfamiliar to me.
 
In fact, Smokey John's in Madison, Wisconsin, IIRC, is one example that comes immediately to mind.

I think it might be reasonable for takeout, but would find it annoying for dine-in.
 
I got takeout from Sonny's the other year on my way back from Daytona, and I swear I was using their large BBQ sauce packets (about 2 oz) for months.  The checkout gal threw in handfuls of them in each flavor.

In fairness to the Pearl Country store apparently about 75% of their business is take-out but they do have a few tables for eat-in. I don't know if they "enforce" the policy on the eat-in orders.

I suspect folks charge what the public will pay.  To me personally, it is not a reasonable charge and I would not pay nor patronize the establishment.
 
We do not have that many BBQ places in Knoxville but I am not aware of that particular practice around Knoxville.
 
Many places claim to have the best sauce in the world.  I am aware that some are far better than others but most are similar in many ways.
 
$0.35 is not much and I probably would not gripe but somehow that galls me.

I guess BBQ meats are a little unique in that I think you can reasonably expect that sauce is included in the price. In this case both a  1/4 lb and 1/2 lb plate come with 2oz of sauce. While many people don't use sauce at all I would guess the great majority of people eating BBQ do use sauce. 2oz may be adequate for 4oz of meat but probably not for 8oz. I was trying to think of parallels with other foods but the only thing that would pop in to my head was CFS. I doubt if many places would limit you to 2oz of gravy before charging extra.

I dont think that would fly in  most places.

Ridiculous! You'd never see that in Texas. Besides, most places in Central Texas won't even serve sauce.

 
Hate to say it, but RUB in New York City used to give two small containers of BBQ sauce when I ordered a half-pound of brisket to go.
 
Last spring, when I noticed only one container, I asked for a second and was told it would cost $0.50.

I've seen it in only a couple of places, but I agree with MellowRoast.  If it's that good, bottle and sell it and make some proper money instead of nickel-and-diming customers.

Old Fashioned, Private Reserve, Secret, Cold Remedy, Hallelujah, Hot, Carolina Vinegar, yep, 7! All except for the Vinegar are My Old Fashioned, a sweet tomato based sauce, that have been altered with different ingredients, for instance the Hallelujah has pineapple in it. Cold Remedy has fresh Horseradish and Penzys hot mustard, which Phillipe's in LA uses to make it's famous mustard. Secret has fresh ginger and lemongrass, the hot is Old Fashioned with Hank's Hot sauce. Private Reserve has vinegar and mustard added to the Old fashioned. The Carolina Vinegar is Cider Vinegar a little sugar some water and ground red pepper, a little salt.

Wow, now that's what I call variety.  I've never seen that many sauces in a barbecue place, but I like the idea.

Sauce on BBQ, I didn't know such things existed.

Similar to Canter's Delicatessen charging extra if you want chicken or carrots in their matzo ball soup.
 
The cleverly don't call it chicken soup because you don't get any if you don't pay extra for it.
 
I've also seen menus stating that if you want a slice of tomato on your sandwich it will cost you.

I have often seen an extra charge for tomato and also an extra charge for a "deluxe" sandwich which was Lettuce and Tomato basically. Now that I think about it I believe we had a BBQ place in Tennessee that charged for "extra" sauce on take out orders.
Also Twinwillow are there really BBQ places that don't serve any sauce as in we don't have any sauce?

Ed Boudreaux's in Asheville NC has something like sixteen sauces.  Unfortunately, quantity trumps quality there, but I admire their spirit.

- Micanopy has been a beloved spot of mine since I spent 2 years in Gainesville as a resident at Shands Hospital (U. of FL).  Hard to think of it as imperfect.
 
- When an Arby's opened in my town in AZ and had little individual packets of Arby Sauce for their sandwiches and told me each customer could only have 2 (no matter how many sandwiches you bought), I walked out and didn't go back for a year, by which time the policy had changed radically (now they don't use the packets any more and you can have all the sauce you want).
 
- Restauranteurs make a mistake nickel and diming the small stuff.  Raise the price of the Q enough to cover the occasional request for more sauce and nobody will care, for gosh sakes.  But some of them will be very annoyed by this policy (I'm one).

Zaxby's has perfected the art of nickel and diming customers.  They charge 25¢ for extra packs of lab-produced dipping sauce (gotta love those chemicals), and 27¢ for water, so if I ever stop there, it’s on a Sunday, when Chick-Fil-A is closed.

Okay, where can I buy the Cold Remedy sauce.  That sounds awesome. 

I see  nothing wrong with charging  extra for things that will have impact  on   profit.  For years, I  have paid extra for  blue cheese dressing.  Why  should the price of everyone's salad  be increased because of me?
 
I  have noticed that  people  take  many  more  packets of  sauce and other  stuff that is offered.  They ask for another handful;  don't use it and leave it on table  or else take it home.
 
I went to an Arby's with  the  youngest grandchild a  couple ofyears ago and  saw this.    A man   had a container with him  and  patiently   pushed the  tap  for  the  Arby  sauce  dozens of times to  get his  jar full  I  could not believe my  eyes.
 
There are so many people out there  trying to get stuff for  nothing.  I  would  charge  extra too.  Why  make the  customer  that   is  honest and just wants to  pay for what he gets   have to  have a  price increase.
