Charleston, WV's Southern Kitchen to close

http://www.wsaz.com/news/headlines/10287837.html

My parents had their first date here in 1981. Not the best place in Roadfood, but it had character.

I'm sorry to hear about this. It will be interesting to hear why they are closing.

I know some others didn't like the place, but I have been there twice and enjoyed both meals. Their peanut butter pie was especially good. So what is going to happen to all the chicken figurines?

That's sad, I'm glad I got to go there this past Labor Day Weekend. Perhaps the new owner will keep it as is. Either way, I'm also glad if I do return to visit Charleston that I found a new place, The Farm Table in South Charleston which in my opinion was even better than Southern Kitchen.

I was planning on trying The Farm Table next time through Charleston anyway, but now I guess I have no choice.

The Farm Tunnel is decent--has its off days like a lot of places.

Honestly, in Charleston my favorite breakfast stop is the Krispy Kreme.

I'm sure I'll see something else on it around the 15th when the doors close.

The past few times I've driven past there haven't been many cars in the parking lot, so maybe business just isn't what it used to be? It couldn't be for the real estate--that area's been going steadily down the drain for years.

Southern Kitchen will close on Monday 10/15. The owner passed away about a month ago, and she left the restaurant to her niece in Texas. The niece apparently has no interest in the place ever being a business again, as she does not want to sell the business, but rather, close the business and sell the property. There's more in this article....

Here is something I never thought I would write in my life......Thanks Poops!

Reading an article like that really clarifies to me just how important a place like the Southern Kitchen is to its community.

I'm sorry to see it go.

    beachnut,

Does Charleston's mayor know what you have just posted? Unless the property is so valuable that it would provide a better return that the profits from a restaurant, a good lawyer should be able to find a way to weasel out of the anti-social provisions of that will. Throwing employees out on the street is just plain stupid. The niece would just close the place like the will said, and sell the property to the AJM Acquisition Corporation. The niece "knows nothing", like Sgt. Schultz used to say. Of course, the AJM iAcquisition Corporation is a front for prevervationists who simply rehire all the old employees and reopen the restaurant.

I could be wrong but I have a feeling the restaurant will reopen, me thinks the niece is using the provisions of the will as a "negotiating tool"

I've not been there but a few times in the past 15 years, but I started eating at the Southern Kitchen in 1965 when I moved to Charleston. It was a regular breakfast stop for me on my way to work the first year we lived there, and after returning to Charleston in 1969 I'd get there once or twice a week for the next two years.

I went to college just down MacCorkle Ave. It was a fun place to go. Very Small but had a great sense of home cooking. The thing I liked the most, it was open 24/7. Some of would frquent there either after a night at some of the local bars or a long night of cramming for finals. The service was slow at times but the food was always good.

Morris Harvey? At least, that was the name back when it was populated by people from New York.
