Charlestown on a budget! Thu, 09/16/04 11:34 PM (permalink)
Hey y'all and you guys, I'm new to this forum. What a great site!
Found out that I'm going to get to go to Charleston next week. Going to fly in and I'll be there for 4days. Unfortunately, I will be on a budget, but I am a firm believer in Roadfood. Eating on the cheap is quite alright if you mix in the right amount of local color.
So, fill me in---Where should I eat in Charleston, SC!
Love ya!

    Leslie,
Thanks for the input about Cadiz on one of the other threads. We will be there for the Country Ham Fest in a couple of weeks.
What do you think of the Riverview in Ashland City (near you) We had some great Catfish there a couple of years ago.
Check out the review of Jestine's Kitchen on this site.(S C section) It would fit the description of your target eat's on your trip.
    Enjoy and welcome to Roadfood.

      Hi Leslie,

If you are staying downtown and want traditional southern food, go to Jestine's at the corner of Meeting and Wentworth. If you have wheels and want Q come to Mt pleasant and go to Mama Brown's buffet, replete with macaroni and cheese with crusty top, greens, hush puppies, nana puddin and 2 kinds of Q. There's a teeny plance on N Market at the corner of E BAy called Your Place. Burgers only, cash only delish. Email me if you what to know more.

        Al & Shanklemsw,
You're welcome. And do you know I have lived in Clarksville since
'80 and have never ventured to the Riverview. I have friends who have fond memories of it going back as far as childhood, but I've never been. Maybe because when I feel the need for a platter of catfish I head to the Catfish House off of hwy 13 going toward Dickson (Not to be confused with Wilson's Catfish on Wilma Rudolph Blvd). I've not had any that can beat it yet. The cat' is fresh, lightly breaded and not greasy at all. They have fried okra as a complimentary appetizer and two kinds of slaw (creamy sweet and very sour) Don't forget to ask for chow chow, and raw onion to go with the white beans that also comes with the catfish dinner. All is served family style. I always bring my Yankee friends to the Catfish House and none have been disappointed yet (except for that one who was a vegan, but I couldn't help that could I?) I have heard that Riverview and Catfish House are related in some way, but that just might be a true lie. I have decided that before the end of Oct. my husband and I will try out the Riverview and let you know how it goes.
P.S. Caramel Pie...you have got to save room for their Caramel Pie!
And thank you for your suggestions. I already have planned to go to Jestine's but was not familiar with Mama Brown's and I'll keep my eyes open for Your Place. Thanks so much!

Leslie, you may have left already, but there are lots of good, reasonable restaurants downtown. Try Rue de Jean, a great little bistro on John Street. You can spend as much or as little as you want there. If you like them, the steamed mussels are a great deal. Also, there's a really great tapas bar downtown--I can't remember the name, very good, quaint, porch seating and the prices are rediculously low. Ask any young person in a shop around town and they'll know. Good rec above for Justine's.

Oh, also check out Hominy Grill on Rutledge. It's mostly Lowcountry fare and very fairly priced, I think.

Thanks Wahoo, We didn't make Hominey Grill, I had that one circled in my Roadfood book. The Tapas Bar was recommended by the front desk, I wish we had gone there instead of Sticky Fingers! Going to Spoleto next year so I will try again. Thanks
