Charley's Grilled Subs

I think Bill Voss told me about this Philly Cheesesteak Chain a few months back. When I was on Vacation in Hawaii there was one of these at the mall. I ordered a Philly Cheesesteak with sauteed mushrooms and melted swiss cheese. The bread was crusty, the meat was tender and how could you go wrong with melted swiss and sauteed mushrooms. Thanks to Bill Voss for the tip, I remembered out conversation about the Philly Bleu and how we thought a Jalp jack cheese would work well. I will be doing some cook training and I will be putting some of these ideas to work on my menu..................Bill Menu | Charley's Grilled Subs

That chain started here in Columbus. I believe it was started by a couple of guys who were students at Ohio State at the time.

By the way, BillyB, in addition to those Philly cheesesteaks Charley's has offered some other super stuff, including a terrific grilled salmon sub.

I am somewhat surprised I never heard of these folks given they started in Ohio.

I think Charley's is pretty good but I don't think it's too different from other food court based cheesesteak chains (like Great Steak and Potato). It's the kind of place where the cheesesteaks by default come with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. It's good but not what I think of as a true philly cheesesteak.

The bread to me is a very important ingredient - here in Ohio most sub shops and pizza restaurant offer hoagies on soft buns - not crusty and chewy as I prefer and grew up with.
