Chattanooga (minus the ChooChoo)

While BlueMaxx, et.al. were chowing down at the Brickyard, I was rowing down the Tennessee River (3 races, 18.6 miles of rowing, total distance including getting up to the start). Didn't have a lot of time between boat prep and racing to venture around and didn't drag my camera along. My rowing club arrived in drips and drabs and we were all at different hotels so we didn't hook up for pizza at Lupis on Friday night like we usually do. So I wound up having a passable shrimp and cheese grits at Big River Brewing. The beer samplers were good though. On Saturday, several of us had an excellent steak dinner at Hennen's downtown, next to the race venue. Butternut squash soup, medium rare sirloin and wild rice, plus mini beignets for dessert. Because of the time change, I woke up at 4:30 AM on Sunday morning. So I went across the street to the 24 hour City Cafe and had a hugh short stack of pancakes and coffee while reading the only hot off the press Sunday paper a cabbie there gave me and drooled at all the wonderful specialty cakes in the display case. Went back before we left and bought a gigantic chocolate chip cookie for the ride home.

Thats the way to enjoy the town. Have to say City Cafe is one of my favorite spots. Use to live there and my brother still lives there and for some unknown reason whenever I visit we all go to Bea's, love it but want something different.

My son rowed in Chattanooga recently also. Had never been. Seems like a great town. We had supremely tasty pizza at Lupi's. Didn't have time for much else, but that pizza might have been as good as Wooster Street pizza in New Haven. My son and others went to the ribs place down the street and liked, but didn't love it.

Does rowing allow you to eat a lot of carbs like running does?

Mr. Chips, I do not know the answer to that. My son has always eaten EVERYTHING, though he's cut down on desserts lately. Not sure he's serious enough about rowing to change his diet, I think he only cut down on desserts for the girls. Maybe by next year's head of the hooch, I'll know more.

quote:Originally posted by mr chips Does rowing allow you to eat a lot of carbs like running does? Mr. Chips, it depends on how much rowing you do. I don't monitor carbs/protein and when I ran, I never intentionally carbo loaded. I lost 10 pounds training for an erg (rowing machine) marathon last year but I burned less total calories than I used to when I ran marathons because I was putting in 80-120 miles a week versus only 6 hours a week on the machine. However, I haven't changed my diet and have kept the weight off since just rowing 3-4 days a week. Rowing is just a good all around non-weight bearing excercise.
